  Always Guided by Spirit

  Shirley Hessel

When I was going through my divorce 1985 to 1987, I must say I didn't know what I was doing.

Others have said the same to me. Divorce is crazy times. It is also marriage successfully completed.

I now know looking back that it was all guided by spirit. I then looked at all of my life and realized it was all guided by spirit. I never would have been able to dream up such a plan for such a marvelous life. After my seven years in Sedona, AZ, following the divorce, I moved place to place and the guidance was always clear and definite. My poor family, I'm sure, did wonder if I'd lost it. At one point my aunt even asked me if I'd found what I was looking for. I had to explain that I wasn't looking for anything. I was following my guidance which probably meant nothing to her.

Of course there were dark nights of the soul and challenges with emotional testing but that hones and refines the soul. I had to see it all as opportunity disguised as loss along with the joys. I found great satisfaction in the healing modalities I had learned and practiced. Looking back, I realize how very unusual my life was so I conclude it must have been guided. None of it could have been accidental as when my mother was mad at me and I was writing an understanding, forgiving letter to her and felt a green flash hit me in my upper back I heard at the same time this crackling sound. I didn't realize it then but I came to understand that it was a blast of spiritual energy through my shoulder blades. Another time when being given Reiki energy for healing work, I felt the presence in my heart of Jesus, Mother Mary, Sai baba and Yogananda. The next thing I knew they went up my center and out the top of my head and I felt nothing but a pure state of bliss. The feeling lasted 2 or 3 minutes. Again I didn't know why as I had only recently read of Sai Baba and Yogananda.

Yet the experience that amazed me most of all was in 1984 or 1985. I had a teacher of healing who had asked her students to gather in groups during the Christmas season for meditation. I met with the ones who lived in New Jersey back then. We sat in a circle in the living room, about 18 to 20 of us.

When it was the designated time, we suddenly felt like winds were blowing in the room! It got very noisy with the roar of the wind. My body felt like Swiss cheese as if it was full of holes. Literally the winds were blowing through all these holes in our bodies. That is the only way to describe what it was like as I have never felt anything like it before or since. We all had experienced the same thing and were dumbfounded. The experience taught me that we have energy centers or openings around our bodies only we just don't know it. I think now that we were stepping down energies coming into earth from our heavenly benefactors for all her kingdoms. To me, for these unusual things to happen, there has to be a guiding force to it all. Many have experienced unusual, hard to explain, happenings. It reminds me of a book I read long ago by a Dr. Brugh Joy. It was called Joy's Way. He said that three things were important to remember on a spiritual path: 1) Delete the need to understand 2) Make no judgments 3) Make no comparisons. I have found great wisdom in those three things.

What is it that guides us, that leads us on, even if we have no awareness of it? What makes these things happen? We can think of our life as plain and ordinary and yet I believe that it is exactly as it is supposed to be. Why? Each of us has a high self, a soul, with a record of what needs to be accomplished. If it doesn't take place by the end of a life, that is all right. We are never judged. Mastery takes place in its own timing and we have forever.

We are not just our dense form here but spiritual beings having a dense 3rd dimensional experience in duality. We get to experience the opposites here such as love and hate, pain and joy, sadness and happiness, right and wrong, good and evil. Because we come from somewhere else where there may be pure unconditional love, peace and harmony, our earth lives can be very difficult for many of us.

While ensouled on earth it is helpful to listen to our soul voice which comes in many forms. It is also easy to negate it or to not catch on to it. We have to understand that we have guides and helpers in the unseen realm. We have angel helpers and if we but ask for help, they will help us. They work in alignment with our soul knowing our needs and soul plan. The voice of the soul can be an inward hearing of a voice as if someone is talking inside our head. It can sound like a voice from outside one's head too. Many have heard words in their head when no one was around to speak to them. I am not speaking of those with illness who hear voices. One lady told me she would have been killed at a traffic light when a large truck ran a red light. She was all set to step on the gas as the light changed when she heard, “Wait! Don't go!” She said that voice had saved her life.

I heard a voice say to me when I lived in Utah, “Don't waste your time. September.” It seemed to come from outside my head and I was alone at the time. Each time I moved to a new state, I would think that I was going to live there permanently. In Utah I had gone to look at apartment buildings since I was renting a room in a house and wanted my own place. I had a job I liked. When I heard that voice, I got out my dream log and lookd back through it. Sure enough! I had had dreams of moving but ignored them as it seemed as if I had just moved there! These dreams were never lengthy but were very clear.

One time in a dream I found myself looking at a stripped bed with my things neatly in piles on the bed.

Another time there was a motorhome inside a living room. Other times I wouldn't remember the dream but I would see in the morning I'd written “move” or “moving” in my log. Many a time I'd not let it register as I would like it where I was, like the people I was meeting, and like my job. Yet somehow something would get my attention like the voice I heard that day and I would realize this was my guidance I was ignoring. With the Utah voice, it ended up with me moving to Hoquiam, WA, in September of 2001.

Because dreams are another way our soul can guide us, it is important to have a dream journal and to write them down. They can be one word or a short movie in the mind to inform us of what we need to know. The part that messes us up is if we cannot interpret what we remember. There are dream books to buy that give interpretations to symbols in dreams and other help. If our high self needs to get our attention, there can be repeat dreams or a message delivered in a different way in hopes we will understand. Not all dreams are for guidance but many are. We learn to discern.

Our soul guides us by popping things into our head. It's the first thing that comes to us as our soul contact is neither lengthy nor is it going to repeat itself a hundrd times. It may repeat two or three times but if we ignore it, it goes quiet. The main thing is to pay attention to the first inspiration or idea. It can feel like a light bulb going on or it can be more subtle. It can just be a quick knowing or a flash of understanding. Yes, I'm supposed to do this. No, this doesn't feel right. The most important thing is to recognize it, believe in it and follow through.

When I divorced and knew I could live anywhere I wanted, I was reading a magazine article about Sedona, Arizona. Suddenly I felt as if a light bulb went on in my head as I just knew I had to go there to live. My daughter had a similar experience of knowingness as she had finished college and felt called to Arizona. We lived in New Jersey at the time.

Guidance comes from hunches, gut feelings, random thoughts, ideas, inspiration, signs, words of
another that resonate besides in dreams or inner hearing. If we pay attention we open to being aware of the fact that our high self is trying to guide us along. It is trying to get through to us. I even had a physical happening by an unseen being. I was driving along an interstate in North Carolina. As I approached a big curve in the road at probably 70 miles an hour, my foot was suddenly slapped off my gas pedal. It flew into my other foot with a whacking noise. I was startled but as I got around the bend in the road I understood that my angels were on duty as usual. Around the bend there was a large dog by the side of the road. I was so thankful it didn't run out and thankful for my unseen help.

I need to make something clear. I am not writing for ones who follow their guidance. This is all about that there is such a thing. This is for those who doubt. This is an attempt to show how it can work out in one's life if they only give it a try and pay attention. Because of fear, our mind gets into the act and looks for various reasons why it is not a good idea or why we shouldn't do it. The mind is very capable of making us doubt our guidance. We easily can talk ourselves out of it. Lack of
