“Suchin? What are you still doing here? You were off, half hour ago,” Suchin’s mother stood before her, having just come out of the restaurant kitchen. Suchin had been sitting there waiting on Simon since 5PM, but he hadn’t shown. There were few in the restaurant as it was just leading up to dinner service and Suchin and her parents only worked evenings on the weekends. Her Aunt and Uncle took over the night shift during the week. There was no need to, but they spoke comfortably in their Southern Thai dialect, anyway.

“Oh, I was just waiting—for a friend. But it looks like he’s not coming.” Suchin pouted a little, it turned into a frown and then melted into a smile. “But, that’s okay, maybe something came up.” Suchin stood, with new invigoration. She hugged her mother, gave her a kiss on the cheek, got her purse, and then stood for her mother’s review.

“Well, be sure to have some dinner, okay?” Her mother eyed her and watched as Suchin smiled, nodded and headed to the door.

  “You too mother,” Suchin said.

“Yes, yes, Aunt and Uncle will be here soon, then we will come home.”
