FLOYD

FLOYD turns to leave, but gives NEAL a salute before running off. FLOYD exits.
FLOYD (OS)
Come on, Beulah! We’ve got to go!
BEULAH (OS)
It was nice visiting, Evelyn!
EVELYN (OS)
Same here.
SFX: a door slamming.
EVELYN enters.
EVELYN
What just happened?
NEAL
It seems that my mom wasn’t the only one.
EVELYN
You mean to tell me that they thought the whole ‘invasion’ story was—
NEAL

EVELYN

NEAL and EVELYN burst out laughing.
EVELYN
What a couple of twits!
NEAL
I know! You can’t teach foolishness like that.
EVELYN
Oh no! Please don’t kill me, Mr. Alien!
NEAL
Me either! Okay, kill her, but let me live!
EVELYN slaps NEAL on the arm and gives a scornful look.
NEAL
Oww!
EVELYN
Serves you right!
NEAL is still laughing as HE hugs EVELYN.
NEAL
I’m sorry. You know I’d never let anyone take you away.
EVELYN
I know. Good thing those aliens aren’t here to test your honesty.
The lights flicker, then turn off.
NEAL and EVELYN stare at each other.
EVELYN
Is it the lightbulb?
NEAL
No. I don’t think so.
NEAL checks the window.
NEAL
The whole town is out.
EVELYN
That’s odd.
NEAL
Yes…it is.
Beat.
EVELYN
I’ll get the clothes.
NEAL
I’ll get the food. If we hurry, we can catch up to Floyd and Beulah!
NEAL and EVELYN run offstage.
EVELYN (OS)
You think they’ll let us go with them?
NEAL (OS)
God, I hope so. Forget the clothes and food. We’re leaving now!
SFX: a door closing.
