Fire and the darkness, Page 2

Trevor Tanqe

“What is it Master?” asked Manka.

“Is this engine sound real?” he looked Manka into the eyes to confirm if they had a same feeling. “But I can’t see the car” Halabawo added.

Manka listened carefully to the increasing dronning. He nodded his head to Halabawo as a sign to confirm that the sound was real and the car was approaching the homestead. Manka took his drum and they sang cultural songs. Halabawo stood by the entrance of his room as he hummed to the drumbeat.

Suddenly a car arrived at the homestead. There were three men in the car. Two of them hurriedly opened the doors and untied their collegue who was sitting at the back of the car. Halabawo was assured they had a problem that needed urgent assistance.

“Take-off your shoes. Spirit mediums are here! ” Manka instructed. They obeyed and turned to their companion to help him remove his shoes.

Paul opened his eyes. He was still in pain and fear. Everything around added to his pain and he needed a lonely place to rest. He discovered he was tied by two long ropes in his legs. He wondered as he tried to figure out where he was.

Halabawo was clad in his African traditional attire; his skin was painted white with the exception of his eyelids and ears. Black butterfly designs were dotted all over his body, he shook his head and produced a hissing sound. It frightened Paul. He forced his way back to the car, but they tightly held him waiting for Halabawo to say at least a word before they narrated what had happened.

He commanded them to put Paul in a vacant room and wait till sunrise.
