High school. Most of us have been there. Our times spent in those halls of education are remembered either with fondness or with a dread that still haunts us to this day. High school is the time of beginnings and endings; sports, musicals, drama, first loves, broken hearts, and first kisses. If you were there from homeroom to last bell, you loved someone, and you were hurt by some one. That is the way of the mechanism.

You may have written about it. I certainly committed words to paper on a regular basis. I hesitate to call it poetry because there are rules that govern that art and I’m pretty sure I break most of them. Not in that “know the rules before you break them” sort of way. More in a “total disregard for the form” sort of way. However, much like the first time a boy’s clumsy hands fumbles at a bra hook, my poems served a purpose, and the result was pleasant. High school was not hard for me, but I loved, and I was hurt, I wrote about it, and the outlet was good for me.

Most of what you are about to read is from my fours spent at John C. Birdlebough High School in Phoenix, New York. Some of it is from my time at SUNY Oswego, and the rest from some hellish years I spent in New York City. All of the words are what I felt at the time. Even lame poems we wrote in high school can still serve a purpose. If you are out there and in love or hurting, put those things down on paper, it hopefully will all make sense later on. Then you can publish your own collection of lame school poetry. I won’t even mind that yours are better than mine..

  Untold Love

A gem sparkles in a ring

Who knows what happiness it could bring?

  Forever wrapped in gold

a story yet to be told

  A story of a man

and the love he could not give

A story of a man and

  the love he hides within

  He looks deep down

  into the prismatic stone

  A radiant glow that mimics

the emotion churning within his soul

And sees nothing but his own heart

  It is sad but true

A shadow of what he once knew

He stands there in a warm embrace

  His soul churning,

  Internal storm burning

He fell for her soft face

He looks to her now and then

  and wonders if and when

Not willing to take the chance

not willing to lose what they still have

So instead he hopes and prays

  At times venturing into

  the world of false hope

It is on the border he stands now,

  his sword of myth drawn

He peers across the forsaken land

  and looks for hints of

longing, wanting, and maybe even love

Wishing for divine intervention from above.

The Love I Hold in Me

If I said I loved you

  what would you say?

If I tried to hold your hand

  would you push me away?

  Maybe it's different now

  Maybe I'm wrong

Is there still room in your heart?

  It's been so long.

Could you ever take me as I am?

Could you take me for what I will become?

  Feelings aren't different now,

  they never changed

  Oh why can't you see

the love I hold in me?

  You are so beautiful

and I wonder what you want

I would meet your every whim

if you tell me what to do

I would fulfill your every dream

  and bow down to you

I say to myself every night and day

why can't I be with you that way?

I know that we are friends

but I feel so much more

Do I have a chance of

getting my foot in the door?

Tell me what you are thinking.

  Tell me what you feel

What I can do to make

  our love real?

If I came to you now

to tell you how I feel

  Is it worth the chance,

  should I take the risk?

  I....

  I see her walk

and my heart begins to melt

  I hear her voice

  and I feel pure joy

  I touch her hand

and I can not be stopped

I put my arms around her

  and I become immortal

  I have the hope

  I dream the dreams

I feel the need to concede

to the feelings that I feel

My heart does not want to wait

My mind causes me to hesitate

  I know what I want

  I know what I mustn't do

I will not risk it all falling through

  What if I love her

  and she never knows it?

  What if I love her

and I attempt to show it?

  Heart and Soul

&
nbsp; A man of myth and legend

A man of heart and soul

A woman of infinite beauty and grace

A woman with style and finesse

Maybe not meant to be together

  for they are not now

He looks to the dawn of the future

He looks for new ways now

  He tries to show her

the love that he may feel

She may be blind to the love

that he is trying to show

  He does not accept defeat

but he knows not what to do

He is trying to find a way now

A way to make it through

She is there for him now

Like she has been all along

  He never doubts her

because he has no reason to

  My Secret

I used to have a secret

I thought it was safe and secure

  I discovered last night

  That My secret is no

  longer a secret any more

  Every one I know

  supposedly knows my secret

Even she who My secret is about

Now I know that my secret is out

  The tension is there now

I can feel it through and through

Now that I know that you know

I know that I don't have a chance with you

I wish I was the man of myth and legend

that The Duke of Earl should be

I wish I had the charm and grace

to win a place by your side

If only I had my sword of myth

to help me fend off the demons

  in the forsaken land

If only I had the armor of the Paladin

  to protect my heart from

the brutal spears of un-returned love

I can not summon my army

of friends to fight this battle

because to them I don't know

  that they know

  My secret is here

  my secret is out

  no one told it

  it just came out

  Now that my friends know

I have to watch what I show

I have to be careful now

  things are somehow different now

  different in me

  Paladin

  When the light is blocked

  When the mighty have fallen

  When the knights are routed

When the goodness ceases to exist

  There will be one,

  The truly unstoppable one.

He will stand alone in the darkness

He will fight the battle for light alone

Encased in the armor of a paladin

Armed with a sword of myth and legend

Letting the fire burn hot in his soul

The internal light will show through his eyes

  He has nothing to fear

  No reason for worry

  Yes, he is mortal

But he fights with a god's faith and fury

The swords clash with a spark

  The armor vibrates with power

He calls upon his inner fire to

  Heat away the chill darkness

He is surrounded by the blackest black

  His own
