Let the Bird Free - Book One, Page 2

Raissa Batieno

There I was; back in the school of nursing to study anesthesiology. After graduation, I volunteered as a nurse anesthesiologist in the surgical department of the children’s hospital I previously was an emergency room nurse. This degree and mostly the knowledge I acquired were only one more step toward my goal. I was happy caring for the children, and I loved my job but I felt empty somehow.

There was still a question in my mind and a desire in my heart; what are others doing in their hospitals? That was my question. By others, I mean developed countries. How can they find diagnosis—if they indeed found a diagnosis for my father’s illness that we couldn’t find in my country? There was a side of the hospital life I felt I was missing, and I needed to see. What was it? I couldn’t tell, but I felt I needed to see more…to know more. I decided to leave the country in search of an answer to my question. My questioning seemed naïve at the time but seven years later I discovered that the real meaning behind it all was about finding the woman in me. My journey took me to the United States of America…and…that’s when the story of my life started…the story of my growth…fears, hopes, struggles, blessings, failures and successes…My Rain; My Diamond Rain.
