  Earth, Wind, & Fire

  A Tale of Two Lovers

The smooth scent of incense hangs over the dark room. Thick curtains let a single line of sunlight penetrate the gloom. Like an umbilical cord penetrating a womb. Connecting him to a dream world where his fantasies stay. Directing him to the real world and a brand new day. He rolls over grumbles and blinks back the morning sun. His king sized bed has been missing someone.

  And he has too...

Someone too good to be true

Someone who always knows what to do

  And when and how

Someone he wishes he could hold right now

Someone to wake up to and grow old with

Someone to share his most precious of gifts

Sleeping alone in her hollow home. She wakes up to the sound of the dial tone. Full of fear because the sound is so near. But last night it held the voice of someone dear. She caresses the phone and holds it near to her breast. Wondering how long she will have to endure this test. Still she feels blessed

To have found someone worth talking to...

And sometimes he seems too good to be true

Because he always knows what to do

  And when and how

But he can’t be with her right now

To hold her and tell her she’s the one he wants to grow old with

The one to whom he gives his most precious of gifts

  Earth, Wind and Fire

  Over a bottle of wine

  We dined

It was a 3 course meal of body, spirit, and mind

Maybe it was the stars that were aligned

Or maybe she was just fine

But my heart was signed, sealed and delivered

When my way her smile shined

  I felt my spine shiver

  Cuz

  She

  Wuz

  Cold

Colder than tadpoles swimming in the North Pole

  She was rock and roll

But from sometime in the seventies

  Plus she smelled heavenly

  I had been dreading the

  Nightmare I would face

When we first came face to face

You know how it is with blind dates

That Russian roulette of choosing mates

  You can get burned

Like the fire that matches create

  So we sparked a conversation

That led to months of dating

And physical relating on a whole other plane

  Of existence

Then there was the persistence of my pulse pounding

Sometime as I was sliding into home plate

I realized that I`d been running in place

  Because her flawless face

Couldn`t replace the hole in my heart

  From an earlier shotgun blast

From the past that has that uncanny

  Ability and speed

  To catch up to you

Flip you off and make you bleed

  From the need

To forget what she just told you

What she just told me was

  Cuz

  I`d been impersonating a player

  In the most dangerous game

She`d be leaving me broken and lame

  Just to start the same

  Ol` same ol`

Conversation and weeks of dating and sexual relating

  With no substance

Like being trapped in the shadow of Groundhog Day

I see 6 more weeks of winter ahead
