workshop without even removing his pressure suit. Heads turned, watching him tearing around, seemingly in a panic. He told Vince as quickly as he could why he was in a hurry, dived into the workshop and grabbed the tablet. Within three minutes he was back at the airlock, waiting to go through. Vince followed him out, and just got seated before the buggy sped off.

Dave looked round at him, grinned and said “Thanks for coming along Vince, I think I could do with a bit of backup!” “No problem Dave. I never told anyone else what was happening, might’ve caused a bit of a panic.” The two aliens were still standing there and looking quite distressed. Dave handed over the tablet to one of them, and he thought for a moment he saw him smile. They took their places on the transmat pad and stared back at Dave for a moment, then Dave felt a strange sensation coming over him; as words were forming in his mind. Then, as if he were hearing them speak; “We thank you for helping us, our world is many light years from yours and we are explorers like yourselves. We thought we were trapped here forever when we lost our transmat control unit. We can now return home, and we will tell our people of your friendship. Farewell.”

Without really being conscious of what he was doing Dave waved to the two aliens, who returned the gesture. A shimmering bubble of light formed over the transmat pad and the two figures were gone. Dave walked over to the pad, which was now just a pile of dull blue fragments; turned to Vince and said “That’ll give the Professor something to do!”
