wouldn’t want to impose,” Jackie said.

“Nonsense.” He tilted his head slightly. “Has anyone ever told you that you look radiant in the moonlight?”

Delight and titillation flowed through Jackie. She wondered what it would be like to touch him, to wake up next to him. What had he done to stir her desires so? She’d dismissed his earlier comment on marriage and told herself that perhaps he needed the right woman to change his mind--and oh, how she already longed to be that woman.

Before she could form a reply to his question, a car pulled into the driveway and stopped near them.

John! Jackie had forgotten about her beau. John Husted got out of the car and greeted Jackie with a peck on the cheek. Burning with embarrassment, Jackie introduced the men. Pleasantries were exchanged, then Jack excused himself and began heading back to the party.

“Already waiting outside.” John embraced Jackie. “Didn’t know you would miss me so much.”

He held her chin with his fingertips and gave her lips a soft kiss, then opened the car door for her.

Jackie got in and looked toward Jack. He paused on the front steps and returned Jackie’s stare. That impish half-grin of his returned, perhaps letting her know that he intended to call her, no matter who drove her home that night. She wondered if he would follow through, if she was worth the trouble to him. But mostly, she wondered how she would survive an entire summer in Europe without seeing Jack Kennedy.
