I was asked to write this book by Sam Jackson, Managing Editor of Classic FM. When I pointed out to him that there were already very many biographies of Mozart in existence, he said he believed that a new account of the great composer’s life, written in an accessible and readable style, would appeal to Classic FM’s five and a half million listeners. I hope the result meets his expectations.
As with my Beethoven and Strauss biographies, it was a joy to work with Elliott & Thompson, Classic FM’s publisher. Lorne Forsyth, Chairman, and his team have become friends. Olivia Bays, Director, was once again my editor. I was about halfway into the book, when the decision was made to bring publication forward by a whole year to meet the 225th anniversary of Mozart’s death in December 2016. This made huge demands on all aspects of production and resulted in a period of intensive writing, with the manuscript being completed in a matter of weeks. I am thus more than ever grateful to Olivia, as well as Pippa Crane and Jill Burrows, for spotting many repetitions and inconsistencies, as well as highlighting passages that needed clarification or expansion. The book is immeasurably better for their careful work. Pippa also sourced the illustrations, while designer James Collins worked at great speed to prepare the book for publication, and cover designer Tash Weber created a beautiful jacket.
