It Was You, Page 38

Jo Platt

‘And the other thing I was thinking,’ he continued, ‘is that maybe I need some new cushions.’

I looked up a second time, this time to frown. ‘That joke is wearing so thin.’

‘And I was wondering if you…’

‘Really. Stop talking, Jon.’ I reached up to place my hand across his mouth.

He took my hand and kissed it. ‘And I was wondering,’ he smiled, ‘if you might share some of yours with me.’

  ‘My cushions?’

‘And some of your other furnishings,’ he said, ‘at some point. What do you think?’

I took hold of his shirt collar and pulled him towards me. ‘I think,’ I said, ‘that you should never mention cushions ever again. But I also think…’

  ‘Yes?’

I kissed him. ‘…that I would be delighted to share my furnishings, both hard and soft, with you.’

  ‘Long term?’ he asked.

‘Extremely.’ I smoothed his ruffled hair, as he began to trace the neckline of my blouse with his finger. ‘Careful,’ I said, ‘you’re making me feel asthmatic.’

He lowered his head and kissed me. ‘Really?’

  ‘Ye…s.’

He laughed. ‘Come on,’ he said, taking my hand and leading me towards the hallway. ‘If you’re feeling so out of breath that you can’t even enunciate a one syllable word, then I think it’s definitely time for bed.’

I smiled up at him. ‘I’m sorry.’

He paused momentarily to turn off the living room lights and then looked down at me and returned the smile. ‘That’s OK,’ he said, kissing me again, whilst extending an arm and flicking the switch. ‘But just try not to calm down at all on the way up the stairs.’
