Waking Up Dead, Page 3

J.A. Cunningham

he noticed there was someone standing by his grave. Jake was afraid to look up to see who it was, so he just stared at his grave. All of the sudden, he got a whiff of his wife's perfume. That's when he decided he must look up. As Jake looked up, he saw his beautiful wife, Lara, holding Shyan. They were both crying. “I'm right here, Lara my love, I'm right here.” Jake said, full of tears. He noticed quickly that they could not hear him, as he was really dead. Jake noticed that Lara was holding a coffee cup.

“Alright, daddy's little sunshine, let's give daddy his coffee and tell him good-bye again.” Lara said to Shyan

Lara set Shyan down and gave her the cup of coffee. Shyan placed it by Jake's tombstone and quickly got back into her mother's arms to cry.

“Momma, will we come back tomorrow to see daddy?” Shyan asked between sobs.

“Yes, yes we will.” Lara replied.

Jake was crying more than he ever had. All he wanted to do was grab them both in his arms and hold them once more but he couldn't.

“God, why? Why did I have to die? Why?” Jake yelled out as Lara and Shyan walked away.
