Dr. Samir K. Bramhachari, Director General Council for Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) today announced the prestigious Shantri Swarup Bhatnagar Awards for the Year 2013. The awards were announced during the CSIR’s 71st Foundation day Celebrations held here in New Delhi. According to it, eight (08) scientists have been selected for Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology for the year 2013. They are as under:

A leader and his context...
The genesis of a leader starts within the context in which his requirement arises, the context which makes him an indispensable asset. This context defines to whom he is attractive to – the class of people he aspires to lead, the generation he hopes to inspire.
India of the 1990s/2000s needed a transitional figure to enable a smooth transition from the ‘socialistic land of the license raj’ to the ‘neo-capitalistic land of reforms’. India needed leaders who were socialists at heart, reformists by deed. This context defined the prominent leaders of these decades – from Narasimha Rao to Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
India of the present has 5 very important aspects that defines the context of the leader it awaits/deserves:
- India’s demography is at its youngest.
- The middle-class and the neo-middle-class are at its highest numbers since independence.
- An entirely new generation of voters are born in the era of reforms, an era where aspirations are beyond just ‘Roti-khapda-makhan’.
- Poverty is at its lowest in decades implying the purchasing power of the people have increased tremendously.
- Economic reforms are no longer at its infancy and the country has come to realize the infinite potential it holds in the future – immediate and long-term.
An average thinking Indian of the day is thus no longer
- satisfied with the rhetoric of secularism.
- believes in the farce of religious identities and the politics of appeasement.
- restricted in the extent to which he can dream.
- satisfied by a mere representative democracy.
An average thinking Indian of the day is hence expectant of
- a leader with a vision. A vision that sees beyond tomorrow.
- a leader who is communicative. Communicative of the problems facing the nation & the solutions that awaits them.
- a leader who believes in the politics of development. Politics which helps India achieve its potential.
- a leader who fosters participative democracy. A democracy where citizens participate actively and are not just passive viewers.
This context of ‘what India is’, and ‘what Indians want’ defines the leader which it awaits/ deserves. Myopia of present day politicians can only be cured by hypermetropia of its citizens. Restlessness of the citizens can only be cured by the patience & far-sightedness of its leaders. Aspirations of the many can only be realised from the inspirations of the few who can lead the many.

By gone …Nokia , Ericsson era …
It was just few years back in my Engineering in 2005 , having a Nokia was the Cool thing , people Spoke about the costly Erickson and Motorola phones , blackberry as always was the business phone which hardly few got to College , I remember discussing a lot about how Nokia had created a revolution with 6600 or other phones which played Videos on them , back then Samsung was a very small player and people hardly respected it and IPHONE never existed back then ( it was first released in 2007 ) . Samsung came up with a BADA OS in their Smartphone and Nokia started with Symbian and people were struck by the beauty of Iphone , the market went gaga over the huge competition , new models coming out each day and the Korean Gaint Samsung came up with models which were very cost-effective , Google Played the Trump Card with releasing an Open Source called Android OS For mobiles.
As they Say adapting to the Changes is only survival tool for companies , Samsung and HTC were Swift to switch to Android and make best use of the market potential in India , SONY after separation with Ericsson also entered Indian Markets but Samsung and HTC had its Fan base By now , Nokia believed in Symbian and Released few models which could hardly compete with the Versions Samsung and HTC pumped into the Market , with Nokia and sony struggling and Iphones being Available in India, Nokia had to bite the bullet ,they came up with wide variety of phones with Windows Mobile OS ,but maybe it was too late to make the Impact which it created once with 1100 or 6600 phones . Separations have been drawn now , with Microsoft Going for Nokia , Motorola with Google , and Blackberry Selling itself out , very few players are left in Market today .
Samsung and Sony with its huge presence in the Home appliance sections is connecting our phones with our house appliances making it more interesting and easy to keep a check even from our office , we even have an inbuilt Apple SIRI option in Some of the Cars Manufactured , these developments have increased our dependence on these companies , which were initially just a medium to communicate ….The future of Industry will be interesting , now with Google having its own Set of phones , how long will android be an open source ….if it decides to close doors on Samsung..Will it go back to BADA OS …. Or will it also Fade in time like the Nokia and Ericsson.{Index}
