The Tales of a Swordsman: Surprises of the Unfortunate Kind, Page 3

Dustin R. Freezen

routine was a little extra drama to support his accusation. “Open fire,” the swordsman yelled at the guards.

The commanding officer must have been close. He approached, demanding answers. “What is going on?”

“They’re attacking.” The swordsman stood. “I overheard the townspeople talking about how they wanted the military gone, and they were going to get rid of you themselves if the dragon didn’t do the trick…I killed the dragon. You’re welcome…but they caught me eavesdropping, so I escaped and barely made it here alive.” He was trying to sound convincing, but also put enough pressure on the commander so he’d shoot first and ask questions later. “I promise you, as a swordsman, you have my honor, these people are dangerous. Open fire,” he turned and pointed at the mob. In doing so, he unknowingly sidestepped another spear, which lodged itself in the commander’s leg.

The officer collapsed in shock and pain. He screamed as blood became visible.

“Told you. Proof in the pudding, right there.”

The commander collected himself and shouted, “Open fire! We’re under attack!”

Soldiers jumped into action appearing from every crevasse of the base. The Gatling guns repositioned from sky to land and hellfire rained down on the town of the dragon worshipers.

“They’ll believe anything.” The swordsman muttered to himself about the military. “Morons.”

“Pardon?” A sergeant standing next to him asked puzzled.

“Oh, not you.” He lied. “Them. Townsfolk. Attacking the military.” He threw a hand up. “What morons, you know?”

“Oh. Yes. Not the smartest attack strategy.”

“You got that right. But hey, let me ask you…Is there any place to get a good drink around here?”
