Light Bulb, Page 3

so hard he actually touched his filaments together, and both were surprised to see a little flicker of light radiate from his glass.

"My gosh Roff did you see that, you glowed there?"

"Yes I'm quite excited; I'd better tell my mum when I get in; that's never happened before."

"Hey you might be able to go to the glass factory Roff and get repaired."

"Gosh you're right; oh this is the happiest day of my life Ron." Roff said goodnight to his friend and rushed in to tell his mother the good news. Roff's mother sat and cried, but it was tears of joy. She had prayed for this day for such a long time, and perhaps just perhaps he could be repaired, she would take him to the glass factory the next day.

Next day Roff was up very early, he hadn't slept all night, and was eager to get going; even making his mothers breakfast to save time. Roff's mother could see Roff was very excited and hurried to get ready. After she had wolfed down her breakfast they left and caught the bus to the factory. They walked through the gates, and could smell the molten glass as they got closer, to the wards. Roff's mother asked to speak with the Electrolyte in charge. Soon a bulb appeared and took them into a visitors waiting area and told them that the Electrolyte would not be long. They waited for what seemed like forever, and then the door opened and in walked the top bulb.

"Good morning what can I do for you today?"

"It's my son sir he hasn't been able to shine since he was born, because of filament damage, but last night on a bus coming home he glowed slightly; is there anything you could do for him."

"Well let's see shall we." The Electrolyte looked at Roff and gave him a full examination, and then when he seemed satisfied he plugged him into the grid. Roff shone very dimly but it was enough. The Electrolyte shook him a little and all of a sudden he beamed as bright as any.

"Ahh I see what the matter is, he shall need a small operation to fix this but he should be out in a couple of hours." Roff's mother was very happy it was the best news she had ever had. Roff was taken into another part of the factory to have his cap removed and cement extracted then they would remove his glass, then finally his filaments would be bonded to their wire frame. A few hours later Roff was taken from the ward and led into the waiting area where his mother was still waiting for him. He shone as bright as the Great Light, and his mother was so happy she cried. When they eventually got home Ron was waiting with the rest of the gang to see the new Roff.

  "Hi how was it mate?"

"It was a weird sensation when they took my cap off, then they extracted my cement, that was very weird, and then I was left to freeze for a while when they removed my glass."

"Wow they had to do all that; well how do you feel now?"

"I feel just wonderful, and I'm pretty sure I could sail through any test now, I'm ever so bright." They all laughed even Roff's mother, who asked him not to start showing off to his friends. Roff did rather well at college after that and him and Ron went on to have promising careers in the glass industry. Roff and Ron eventually got married to Osram and Pendant and Wattie and Rose were at both of their weddings. It was to be another two years before Wattie and Rose got flexed together. The gang were set to have many more adventures but most of these would be quite light hearted.
