Fables and Enchantments, Page 4

Camille LaGuire

“I’m a wild pony, and you can’t catch me!” it said as it ran away.

The teachers stood and looked at each other. They didn’t know what to do. The pony was just too fast and too troublesome to catch. They all sat down and stared at the floor. Then Mrs. Johnson had an idea.

“Mr. Faring,” she said. “Do you still have that book about The Brave Little Pony?”

“Yes, I do, but I don’t feel like reading it right now.”

“Please go get it for me, and the rest of you, please call all the children to the gym for an assembly.”

“But the pony will just come and ruin that too!” said Dr. Taylor.

“That is what I’m hoping,” said Mrs. Johnson.

Soon all of the children were in the gym, and the teachers stood up in the front. Everyone was waiting, but Mrs. Johnson just looked through Mr. Faring’s book.

Of course, the pony burst in almost at once, and began galloping around the gym. Mrs. Johnson began to read the story in a loud, clear voice. It was a story about another pony, who went bravely through many exciting adventures.

At first the wild pony did not listen, and it kept knocking over chairs and tearing down curtains, but after a while, when the story got exciting, it stopped. Pretty soon the pony came right up to stand in front of Mrs. Johnson. Whenever the story got scary, its eyes would get wide and its tail would stand on end, and when the scary part was over, it would sigh with relief.

When at last the story was done, the pony heaved a great satisfied sigh, and closed its eyes. It fell asleep right there, standing up, which is how ponies take a nap.

The teachers put their fingers to their lips, and all the students were quiet. They sneaked out on tip-toe, and everyone was able to get back to class.
