Dime qué se siente y qué color

      adquieren entonces tus ojos notables.

      A FLY INSIDE A FLY

      A THOUGHT INSIDE A THOUGHT

      AND MARIO SANTIAGO INSIDE

      MARIO SANTIAGO

What do you feel, tell me what do you feel

when the birds get lost in red

and you’re steadied against a wall, your pants

split and hair disheveled as if you’d just

      killed a president.

What do you feel in the reddening hour,

in the agitprop hour, boots sinking

into the snow of an avenue

      where no one knows you.

Forked tongue of knowing how to be alone and images

      that destiny (so pleasant) drags

      beyond the hills.

Tell me, what do you feel. What color

do your remarkable eyes turn then.

      UNA ESCENA BARCELONESA

No le hago mal a nadie, dijo

      preguntando con toda su cara

      por qué se lo llevaban.

      No adónde, sino por qué

No le hago mal a nadie

      Estoy en la Invernal. Escucho

a los grajos jugar en la nieve.

Del bosque vacío vienen los camiones.

      A BARCELONA SCENE

I’m not hurting anyone, he said

      asking with his whole face

      why they were taking him.

      Not where, but why

      I’m not hurting anyone

I’m in the Hibernal. I’m listening

to crows play in the snow.

Trucks are coming from the empty forest.

      FRAGMENTOS

      Detective abrumado . . . Ciudades extranjeras

      Orfeo . . .

      FRAGMENTS

      Crushed detective . . . Foreign cities

      with Greek-named theatres

      The Majorcan boys committed suicide

on the balcony at four in the morning

The girls leaned out upon hearing the first shot

      Dionysus Apollo Venus Hercules . . .

      A variety Dawn

      over the lines of buildings

A guy who hears the news inside his car

And rain tapping at the bodywork

      Orpheus . . .

      BISTURÍ-HOSTIA

      intermitentemente.

      SCALPEL-HOST

      Beggars’ Arch. The detective thought

he was heading into a landscape

      of sumptuous gestures. Barcelona streets,

stomped a thousand times, with cock burning

      and crew cut hair.

Allow me to introduce you: the Beggars’ Arch.

      Layers of cold gestures

as if slices of air were swooping down

      on a body we desire

      from time to time.

The Persian blinds let in, scarcely, two beams of moonlight.

Like in an old Spanish film,

There’s no one in the room,

The ashtrays are clean, the bed still made,

the wardrobe closed and full of coats, jackets, pants.

      But there’s no one.

      Only two beams of moonlight.

Like in an old Spanish film.

y luego echó a caminar calle abajo

hacia el centro de este pueblo miserable.

I deserved every bit of it, boss, don’t turn on the light.

Silent cars of a foreign city.

I have no idea where I am, what is this place,

the last image of reality, at least that I remember,

was a girl closing the metal shutters

      of a corner store.

      What happened to that girl?

I have no idea, I just remember she was a redhead

and she looked at me for a second

and then started running down the street

toward the center of this miserable town.

      NUEVAS URBANIZACIONES. PESADILLA

Ciudades nuevas con parques y juegos infantiles

      y Grandes Supermercados . . .

En zonas abiertas, en viejos pantanos, en haciendas

      abandonadas . . .

Con guarderías y farmacias y tiendas

      y pequeños restaurantes . . .

Un poco adormilado tal vez . . .

Y es demasiado tarde para salir indemne

      de la pesadilla . . .

      NEW SUBDIVISIONS. NIGHTMARE

New cities with parks and playgrounds

      and Super Supermarkets . . .

In open fields, in old swamps, on abandoned

      ranches . . .

With daycares and pharmacies and stores

      and little restaurants . . .

And 15-year-old girls walking with their eyes closed . . .

      Someone’s responsible for all this,

there must be some watchman somewhere,

      an executive board . . .

Girls and boys chatting on rooftops . . .

      Thin voices muffled . . .

Like listening to someone talk in the street

      without leaving your car . . .

      A little sleepy perhaps . . .

And it’s too late to exit the nightmare

      unscathed . . .

      THE BEND

The 20-year-old immigrant punk, penknife on

the neck of the Chilean, 25, only tourist out at that hour.

The penknife is white like the windows at that penniless hour

      and both their images overlap

a couple seconds. The lyrics of a song, a café

con leche, an injection, some corduroys that smell

like shit, a woman’s nose, a summer tan,

the actual hands of someone drawing back a curtain.

Communion. He takes a step back and looks at his

attacker’s face (he could just as well say: his guide).

Waves of broken words can’t seem to come out of his

belly, a kind of haste to undress the younger

man he has in front of him and checkmate. Between

the arches of the Martorell plaza in Barcelona, he takes a step back

as if the game had never ended, maps from

15 years ago, desire that only manifests itself in a half-smile

And traces a pyramid, a buffalo, something like stars

the boy’s black arm, but his penknife doesn’t shine

because in the Chilean’s mind it’s already a key.

me parece tan miserable y otras

tan sola y tal vez no sea

ni una cosa ni la otra y yo

no haya bebido café sino coñac y coñac

It’s nighttime and I’m in the Zona Alta

      in Barcelona and I’ve drunk

more than three cafés con leche

      with some people I don’t

know beneath a moon that sometimes

seems so miserable and other times

so alone and maybe it’s neither

one nor the other and I

haven’t drunk coffee but cognac and cognac

and cognac in a glass restaurant

in the Zona Alta and the people I

      thought I was with really

don’t exist or are faces floating

at the table next to mine

      where I’m alone and drunk

spending my money on one edge

      of the unknown university.

      OTRO AMANECER EN EL CAMPING

      ESTRELLA DE MAR

Sólo la radio cruza el silencio

      (Magníficas nubes Magnífico aire)

      Voces lejanas que compartí

      contigo Canciones

      que bailamos hace mucho

      cuando ninguno tenía

      veinte años

y éramos menos pobres y menos serenos

      que hoy

      (Magníficas nubes Magnífico aire)

Dulce estilo nuevo de la primavera

      10 grados sobre cero

      a las 6 a.m.

ANOTHER MORNING AT ESTRELLA DE MAR CAMPGROUND

Only the radio cuts through the silence

      (Magnificent clouds Magnificent air)

      Distant voices I shared

      with you Songs

      we danced to long ago

      when we weren’t even

      twenty

and we were less poor and less serene

      than today

      (Magnificent clouds Magnificent air)

      Sweet new springtime style

      50 degrees

      at 6 a.m.

      NADA MALO ME OCURRIRÁ

      Avui i sempre,

      amics.

NOTHING BAD WILL HAPPEN TO ME

She who makes frontiers flicker goes by the name of Destiny

but I call her Demented Girl.

She who slips swiftly along the lines of my hand

goes by the name of Destruction

but I call her Silent Girl.

      Avui i sempre,

      amics.

es agradable poder aferrarse a algo

      simple y real

como echar a alguien de menos

      FRANK O'HARA

      Escucho a Barney Kessel

y fumo fumo fumo y tomo té

      e intento prepararme unas tostadas

    llena

con caldo de pollo comprado por la

mañana y cinco huevos y un poco

de moscatel y Barney Kessel toca

      la guitarra arrinconado entre la

      espada y un enchufe abierto

      creo que haré consomé y

después me meteré en la cama

a releer La Invención de Morel

y a pensar en una muchacha rubia

hasta que me quede dormido y

      me ponga a soñar.

it is nice to be able

      to cling to something

      simple and real

      like missing someone.

      FRANK O'HARA

      I listen to Barney Kessel

and smoke smoke smoke and drink tea

and try to make myself some toast

      with butter and jam

but discover I have no bread and

it’s already twelve thirty at night

and the only thing there is to eat

      is a nearly full bottle

      of chicken broth bought this

morning and five eggs and a little

      muscatel and Barney Kessel plays

      guitar stuck between a

      rock and an open socket

I think I’ll make consommé and

      then get into bed

to re-read The Invention of Morel

and think about a blond girl

      until I fall asleep and

      start dreaming.

PRIMAVERA DE 1980. PARA RANDY WESTON

El misterio del amor siempre es

      el misterio del amor

y ahora son las doce del día y

estoy desayunando un vaso de té

      mientras la lluvia se desliza

      por los pilares blancos

      del puente.

      SPRING 1980. FOR RANDY WESTON

The mystery of love is always

      the mystery of love

and now it’s twelve noon and

I’m having a cup of tea for breakfast

      as the rain slips

      along the white piers

      of the bridge.
