FOR ROSA LENTINI, WHO WANTS TO BE GROWN UP AND RESPONSIBLE

Einstein emotes something like surprise or even gratitude for the fact that four sticks of the same size create a square, when in most universes he is able to imagine the “square” does not exist.

      ALFONSO REYES

      Let’s play blind man’s bluff

when we’re the only two at home

and the little hunchback’s watching from the street

      Hermosos instantes sin memoria

como poesías perdidas por Bertran de Born

      y leyendas mesoamericanas.

      Ocultos en el lecho, felices,

      mientras afuera llueve.

      Hermosos instantes sin cartografías

      ni valerosos capitanes

que garanticen el retorno a casa.

Donde no existen muchachas ni ciudades

      ni incendios.

      Tan sólo tu cuerpo

      cubierto con una gabardina sucia,

      recostado en la playa,

      leyendo.

      Beautiful unremembered moments

like the lost poetry of Bertran de Born

      and Meso-American legends.

      Hidden in bed, happy,

      while outside it rains.

      Beautiful uncharted moments without

      valiant captains

      to guarantee the trip home.

Where there are no girls or cities

      or fires.

      Just your body

      wrapped in a dirty raincoat,

      reclining on the beach,

      reading.

      LA CHELITA

      Entre esencias vive Chelita

      entre ideas absolutas y perfumes

      delgado cuerpo de proletaria

      ahora para siempre vagabunda

casi una sombra de Chile en Europa

que no alcanza la palabra artesana

ni un rumor de agua estancada

ni un sueño de amor e inocencia

      LA CHELITA

      Chelita lives amid essences

      amid absolute ideas and perfumes

      thin proletariat body

      now and forever a vagabond

a virtual shadow of Chile in Europe

who doesn’t pull off the word artisan

or a murmur of stagnant water

or a dream of love and innocence

      STATION PLAZA

Under the gray sky —but nothing is permanent,

surrounded or protected by bare larches

      the plaza comes into reality.

Barely a trickle of water leaks out

of the moss-covered fountain and on

the other end an iron arch composes

a vaguely sculptural gesture the missing stand

of something we’ll never see again. It doesn’t

require rain or the mind’s feminine

shadows. The plaza recomposes itself as you walk away,

its stillness a traveler’s blessing. Here,

on the moor there are still lines, loose

sketches of its clearly dying state.

Vuelven

hacia ellos después de este intervalo.

      El reencuentro sólo les devuelve

      la certidumbre de su unión.

      THE FRONT LINE

In this poem, the front line holds together.

      Faces white, hands

interlacing their bodies or in their pockets.

Some close their eyes or stare at the floor.

The others are sizing you up.

Eyes drained by time. They turn back

toward each other after this pause.

      The face-off only fortifies

      the certitude of their union.

      Un Tao . . . Un Tao . . .

      A Tao . . . A Tao . . . Our little Darío

      headed off on a streetcar

      through the Mexico City night.

      With his purple jacket

      on a near empty streetcar.

      He smiles through the window.

      Then the streetcar is lost

      with its electric clatter

in the middle of the night.

And the scene repeats itself over and over

and he tells me without going outside

      one can know the world.

Luciano a quien gustaba jugar conmigo

Those Mexico City dawns appear this time of day

Reoffending With Carla and Ricardo and the lovely

Luciano who’d like to play with me

And the minibuses that carried my remains

      along Avenida Revolución or Niño

Perdido Metaphors the citizens were careful

to drop at the feet of the foreigner

who hung from the rope so many months And Mario

and Mara and Bruno beginning their retreat

      to better winter quarters

And the thin light of six a.m.

      Brazos, axilas, suaves muslos peludos.

      Los de ella no tanto,

Escribirás luego con una sonrisa y solo

En un bar de la autopista

      De Castelldefels.

Two bodies in a sleeping bag

      Like a chrysalis masturbating.

A cold spring morning by the sea.

Without bending, caressing whatever you could

      Arms, armpits, soft hairy thighs.

      Hers less so,

You’ll write later with a smile alone

In a bar on the highway

      Of Castelldefels.

Truth is I’m the one who’s most afraid

even if it doesn’t seem so In the dusk

of Barcelona One or two or three bottles

of dark beer The lovely Edna so far away

A lighthouse sweeps the city three times

This imaginary city One two three times

Edna said Indicating a mysterious hour

      for sleep Without meeting again

      Once and for all

      Ciudades supermercados fronteras

(¿Un Séneca pálido? ¿Un bistec sobre el mármol?)

De la angustia aún no hemos hablado

      (Basta ya, dialéctica obscena)

Ese vigor irreversible que quemará tu memoria

It doesn’t matter where the wind drags you

(Yes. But I’d like to see Seneca here)

Wisdom is keeping your eyes open

      during the fall (Sonic blocks

      of despair?) Studying in police

      stations Meditating on penniless

weekends (Topics you’ve got to repeat, said

      the voice offscreen, without complaint)

      Cities supermarkets frontiers

(A pale Seneca? A steak on the marble?)

      Not to mention angst

      (Enough already, obscene dialectics)

That irreversible vigor that will fry your memory

      UN FIN DE SEMANA

Han cerrado la zona. A esta hora

sólo quedan en pie los cordones

de la policía, las parejitas sin salir

      de sus habitaciones,

el dueño del bar indiferente y calvo,

      la luna en la claraboya.

Sueño con un fin de semana

lleno de policías muertos y automóviles

      quemándose en la playa.

      Jóvenes cuerpos tímidos, así

      resumiremos estos años:

jóvenes cuerpos tímidos que se arrugan,

      que sonríen y estudian despatarrados

      en la bañera vacía.

      A WEEKEND

They’ve shut down the area. The only ones

      still standing are cordons

      of police, lovebirds locked in

      their rooms,

      the barkeep indifferent and bald,

      the moon in the skylight.

      I dream of a weekend

full of dead police and cars

      burning on the beach.

      Timid young bodies, that’s how

      we’ll sum up these years:

      timid young bodies wrinkling,

      smiling and studying, sprawled out

      in the empty bathtub.

      NADA MALO ME OCURRIRÁ

NOTHING BAD WILL HAPPEN TO ME

      Azimuth Dizzie Gillespie Charlie Mingus

      MONEY

I worked 16 hours at the campground and at 8 a.m.

I had 2,200 pesetas despite having earned

      2,400 I don’t know what I did with the other 200

I guess I ate and drank beer and café con

leche in Pepe García’s bar inside the

campground and it rained Sunday night and all

Monday morning and at 10 I went to

Javier Lentini and got 2,500 pesetas for a

selection of poems by young Mexicans that

would appear in his magazine and by then I had more than

4,000 pesetas and I decided to buy a couple

blank tapes to record Cecil Taylor

      Azimuth Dizzie Gillespie Charlie Mingus

and have myself a good pork steak

with tomato and onion and fried eggs and write

this poem or this note which is like a lung

or a provisional mouth saying I’m

happy because it’s been a long time since

I’ve had this much money in my pockets

      TALLERS STREET

The girl undressed a strange room

      a strange refrigerator some

hideous curtains and Spanish pop music

(My god, he thought) and she wore stockings

clipped to black garters and it was 11:30

at night good for smiling he

      hadn’t completely given up on

poetry a fuck buddy pretty paintings

      poorly framed and hung just

to fill space the girl said careful

put your chubby in slow she took off her beret

they leave yesterday he said applauded the pure

sword fight and your garter belt a double feature

Todos los comercios hoy estaban cerrados

y además sólo tenía 50 pesetas

      Tres tomates y un huevo

      Eso fue todo

Y softly as in a morning sunrise.

      Coltrane en vivo

      Y comí bien

Cigarrillos y té hubo a mi alcance.

      Y paciencia en el compás

      del atardecer.

All the stores were closed today

plus I only had 50 pesetas

      Three tomatoes and an egg

      That was all

And softly as in a morning sunrise.

      Coltrane live

      And I ate just fine

      Cigarettes and tea within reach.

      And patience in dusk’s

      compass.

Paris rue des Eaux He said he

kept liking poetry more and more

      We saw a Dutch film

We ate in silence in his tiny room

      Cheese Milk Claude Pélieu books

I said I was tired and out of money

      It’s time to go back

      A red all-encompassing ceiling

But not to scare the children, he muttered

      MARIO SANTIAGO

¿Qué estará haciendo Mario en México?

Recuerdo una foto que me envió

      desde Israel,

      una simple foto de metro.

Y sus ojos miraban hacia el cielo.

En el dorso: parte de una canción

      el cielo se está nublando

      parece que va a llover.

      MARIO SANTIAGO

What could Mario be doing in Mexico?

I remember a photo he sent

      from Israel,

      a simple photobooth shot.

His eyes looking up at the sky.

On the back: part of a song
