Johnny Cool, Page 2

Alberto Baston

Johnny woke up in heaven. At least that’s what it looked like to him. Heaven was cloudy and there were many lines of people. It was as if they were waiting to get to the golden gates. He could see the gates far off in the distance. Johnny was overwhelmed by how beautiful and peaceful it felt. He walked up to join a line. The man at the head of the line said, “Who’s Johnny Cool?!” “I’m Johnny Cool.” The man replied, “I’m your guide. Call me John.” “Wait. I think I remember you from the beach. You gave us the roses and note.” John smiled knowingly and said, “I was trying to warn you about the danger, but you just didn’t listen.” “Can I go back and help myself? I know Sandra and I are in danger.” “It will be very difficult. Yet there is one way you can help yourself. You need to complete a challenge and win in God’s game.” “A game?” John showed him to God’s game. It looked like a giant running track with no end. How could Johnny ever finish it?! The track had six different lanes to the seemingly endless finish line. As he kept thinking of Sandra, and he knew he would accept this challenge.

They met the Coach. He seemed like a strong and kind person. The Coach asked Johnny, “Why do you want to go back to your time and save yourself?” Johnny asked, “How you do know about me? I want to go back to save Sandra and myself.” The Coach answered, “I know your past. What would you like to do?” He answered, “I want to win the challenge.” The Coach laughed at this remark. “I like running and will do anything to finish the test and go back home.”

Johnny started his running test. There were five other runners as well. He ran almost to the finish the line but did not quite make it. He failed! He asked, “Can I start over? I will be better with a second chance.” The Coach said, “Wait and in a few hours I will give you a second chance.” He was disappointed. He practiced his test while he waited and waited. The coach got him back in the game. Johnny was ready this time and determined to succeed. The voice from the invisible speaker said, “Ready! Set! Go!” He ran well. Halfway into the race, he became very close to the runner in front of him. He began running faster and faster. Much faster than all the others. He won! Johnny implored, “Can I go back to save myself?” John’s request was granted and he was allowed to go back to his life.

Johnny returned back to the cliff. He saw the bad guy push past Johnny (Him!). He yelled, “Hey! Why were you pushing me off the cliff?” The bad guy looked very confused that Johnny was standing in front of him alive and became frightened and ran away. Johnny never saw him again. He was so excited to get his life back. Johnny walked with his friends at the street car race. Jeff asked, “Why did you take so long? You missed a good race.” Johnny answered, “I was walking and needed to use the bathroom. Sorry I missed it.” They all got in his car and he dropped his friends off at their homes.

Johnny went to see his friend Adam. He told him about what happened in heaven. He believed in the strength of Adam’s faith. He asked him, “How did you know something bad would happen?” Adam answered, “I felt it. Please don’t tell anybody.” Johnny said, “Ok, I’ll keep your secret. And thank you for being my true friend.”

At 10 p.m., Johnny stopped at Sandra’s father’s house. Johnny picked up a tiny rock and threw it at Sandra’s window. Sandra heard something hit her window and she walked over, looked out and saw Johnny. He saw her and waved for her to come down. She quietly walked out of her house and slowly walked toward him. He gave her a long kiss. He didn’t tell her about what had happened that night, instead he just enjoyed being with her. He received good luck. His life was returned back from the heaven. He was back with Sandra and that was all that mattered.
