Life's Voyage - Adulthood & The Unknown, Page 2

A. C. E. Otakpor

Before you can resist it, you mention your thought

Now look what your actions has brought

A never ending fight will be caused now that it is known

You do not know the truth but wrong accusations are thrown

The little green monster as it is known sits right on your shoulder

Brings tears and sorrow into your home and makes it feel colder

What was once a heart filled with love is now empty

You have now started a war and it is deadly

Every move is counted and every step is watched

If only the words you have said could be squashed

The little green monster as it is known sits right on your shoulder

Satisfied with you as you have done exactly what he has just said with smoulder

With a job well done and another heart broken in pieces

He gets up and dusts of his clothes, getting rid of the creases

With another soul destroyed and will stay fearsome

Jealousy walks out the door to find his next victim

  Life in the house

In the house with the rafters hanging on mercy

Lives a man, lonely and ready to give up on the world

Every day is a battle to breathe, to live and to thrive

In the house with the rafters hanging on mercy.

In the house with the perfectly kept front lawn

Lives a woman, gardening while her husband works

Every day is a joy filled with flowers and sweet kisses

In the house with the perfectly kept lawn.

In the house with two toddlers running free

Lives a married couple, wishing for sleep and loving their saplings

Every day is a rush and full of “leave that” and “stop running!”

In the house with two toddlers running free.

In the house with the alcoholic father

Lives a scared mother and child

Every day is filled with shouting and slamming of doors

In the house with the alcoholic father.

In the house with a single parent trying to feed her children

Lives a child unaware of how difficult life can get

Every day is filled with carefree play and bread for dinner

In the house with a single parent trying to feed her children.

In the house with a man caring for his dying wife

Lives a husband and wife, trying to make the best of their last days together

Every day is filled with silent tears and prayers for another day

In the house with a man caring for his dying wife.

In the house with no soul to keep it warm and live between its walls

Lives a spirit, left seeking the love lost in time

Every day is filled with wandering the corridors of the empty hall

In the house with no soul to keep it warm and live between its walls.

  Love child

I have carried you for nine months

Sang to you and tickled your feet when you kicked

I have endured sickness and funny smells

To see your face I dreamt of each night

My back has ached and sleep deprived me

My clothes clung to my growing belly

Where you lay, I tried to make it comfortable

The foods I loved, I set aside for you I did it all

Because you were made from love and love you are.

I endured tired days and tearful nights

All of this I did with the notion that I will meet you shortly

I calmed your nerves when hiccups took your small body

Massaged you turning around in your cocoon

Made sure you were as healthy as can be

We made a room for you and painted it blue

Toys lined the walls and clothes of every kind

Because you were made from love and love you are.

When it was time to meet you, silently I felt the pain of your life

With each breath I knew I was going to meet you

On the bed I lay, waiting for you to make your presence known

And there you were, finally I will meet

But you did not utter one sound

Your body lay still as you were put into my arms

Your eyes did not greet me and your heart did not beat

I have met you now my sweet child

Because you were made from love and love you always will be.

  Marry me

“Marry me,” he said, and sparks flew like doves being freed from a cage

Be mine forever, I promise to take care of you every day

Protect you and love you until the last breath escapes my lips

Wear the ring I give you and promise me your heart

“Marry me,” he said, and tears of joy appeared on her cheeks

Build a home with me to make our very own

Fall in love with me every morning that you open your eyes

Let us make a family of our very own to cherish

“Marry me,” he said, and make me the happiest man in the universe

Keep your arms around my soul and carry me through the dark times

Help me to understand you better and make it work

Let our relationship thrive and learn others to love

“Marry me,” he said, and let us grow old together

Bring me to my knees with the love you so much want to give

Let the gifts I have to give you rain on you in a thousand petals

Never let my hand go, always stay right by my side.

“Marry me,” he said, and let’s make the best of the life we are given to live

Fill each and every day with your smile, like the sun’s rays on my skin

Help me teach our children the lessons, that life teaches those who are willing

Say yes and I will carry you forever like the angel that you are.

  Money

In your pocket I ching ching ka-ching

Your hand feels over me and I am picked to close the deal

In return for changing hands with the shopkeeper

You are now the proud owner of a new life

If I could buy you a brand new life, I will do it in a heartbeat

You have worked long hours at end to earn me

You feel my texture as we are counted off and placed in your palm

If only I could purchase you a brand new life

I may be filthy and crumpled from years of extensive use

But if I have the right number upon my face, I am your best friend

You choose to keep me safe, tucked deep in your jacket pocket

If only I could purchase you a brand new life

You walk past the shop with the dress you so much want

I burn a hole in your pocket but you hold on

You have learnt the art of saving me for a rainy day

If only I could purchase you a brand new life

In your pocket I ching ching ka-ching

Your hand feels over me and I am picked to close the deal

In return for changing hands with the shopkeeper

You are the proud owner of a brand new life

  My father’s career

To his work he devotes his time and all the energy he has

His father left him a mighty career to uphold and to run

In an office he spends his time and never gets out into the sun

A career he has chosen and ignores the call of love and family

To himself and all the others he must prove that he is worthy

To stand in these big shoes he needs to be the best

There is no time for fun, games and fest

Work consumes him and becomes his only drug

To far places he travels to make his name and his career known

In hotels he stays and lonely it may seem

But it is not of a home, a wife and children of which he will dream<
br />
His career is what he has chosen and happy he is

Every night he takes his work to his small home where he continues

To make his job better for him and for the others

For a young lad, the older ladies seem like mothers

Making sure he eats and keeps himself well

A career - they say, is something you can use to care for the ones you love

Try to find a wife and make a family of your very own

But a career is all that mattered to him

Not a wife or a child could fill the gap of keeping his father’s career

  Needing and wanting

Needing food on the table to stay afloat

Fishing for that morsel in a small, rugged boat

Cleaning the small feed for the ones waiting at the table

Struggling to make this vicious world look like a fable

Wanting the brand new car you saw driving by

Lying, cheating and stealing to make the money for it, try

Desire clouds the mind and in its place a deep longing

To have what someone else has worked hard to make his belonging

Needing clothes to keep loved ones warm

Covering them and protecting them like a bee’s swarm

A piece of cloth here, needle and thread there

Leaving your own body cold and bare

Wanting a piece of jewellery to show the higher class

Flashing it to anyone who might pass

It does not mean that you made the money to buy it

You just use it how you see fit

Needing a penny or two to reach the next town by the bus

To care for a sick relative without a fuss

  Selling bread and singing songs

To make money from the songs that might belong

Wanting a new life and tired of the old

Not wanting to stay at one place and mould

Travelling all over the world to see

Never realizing that your own home is the key

Needing life to give you a sure sign

That one day everything will be fine

Someday the hard work will be worth it

Like watching a dying flower in a faucet.

  Patience (Ndidi)

Patience is not something to learn overnight, it is learnt in a lifetime

It cannot be felt but without it there will be not a dime

Patience is what any person needs to control the world around them

Nothing can be done without it but condemn

Patience is an ability to wait for the good to come or the bad to pass

If you have it you fall under the infinite class

Patience comes with not putting yourself first but another

Like your mother, your sister or your brother

Patience is the growth of a seed into a flower

It may be small now but soon it will have endless power

Patience is being able to tolerate the bad that may come your way

To not lash out at all the things there is to say

Patience is problem solving with more than just a word

Without breaking down what is heard

Patience is the endurance of pain, physical or mental

Rather receive it and persist to be gentle

Patience is waiting for love to find your heart

Without any hasty decisions on your part

Patience is the fulfillment of the great art of life

Something you will for the rest of your life strife

Patience is waiting for time to stand still

Which you now know never will

Patience is longing for someone you will never meet

Waiting for the day they come around to greet

Patience is willing yourself to keep the words you wish to scream within

Touching the patience string, so fragile and thin

  Sias’s wife

Sias found her next to the lake, reading a book

It was love at first sight or she was a great cook

Many kisses later the wedding bells rang

Everyone cheered and Sias was happy, together they sang

He carried his love through the door of their brand new home

They worked together to clean it with water and foam

Sias was a teacher and at home his wife stayed

Washed the dishes and wonderful food she made

At night Sias sat down to enjoy his new wife

They were just beginning together their life

A baby was on the way soon after

They were so blessed and celebrated with laughter

Their brand new home was filled with who they were

Kids on the street would stop by and say “Hello Sir!”

Sias’s wife made cookies and tea for them

They all thought her a real gem

Sias one day came home from his class

He walked into the house and saw a glass

There his wife lay with blood, the reddest red

Never leave your wife alone at home, they had said

A frail soul she was, but he loved her so dear

Never did he think, but now the fear

Sias’s wife took her heart right out of her chest

And laid it out for the first guest

Now stands the house that they made together

Lost in sorrow and pain forever

  Spilled love

I spill my heart right out in front of you on the floor

Waiting for you to turn and walk out the door

I once thought I would be with you until the end

Yet I never saw the undeniable bend

The love we had will never die

The love we had, so strong it made me cry

We tried to look past our differences

And look rather at the preferences

  That fairytale feeling quickly subsided

More that I could ever describe

You said you loved me but you lied

The love we had, had long died

Now I stand here in front of you

Asking you why we have wasted all these years

Planning a family and watched how they grew

Lay late at night telling you of my fears

Spent every waking moment loving you with everything I got

Making your favorite food, pot after pot

Believing in you when no one else would

I would do it all over again if I could

You told me there are no second chances

To hold each other and dance life’s dances

Now I watch you walk out on all we had

No more feelings left except the mad

Upon the closed door I now look

Waiting for you to open it again like a book

I need you to hold me tight and tell me it is okay

Smile at me and bring me a bouquet

Once again in each other’s arms

Protecting each other from all harms

But all I see now in my heart spilled out on the floor

  Looking at a closed door

  The fight for love

One simple word can create havoc in a home

It can cause tears of sorrow never to be forgotten

The more words that flow from our angered mouths makes me groan

My tears make the dry summer dirt sodden

You say things to me that my heart will never bear

You push me to the floor in one huge thrust

Our relationship has another huge tear

The look in my eyes for you - total disgust

As I try to get up from the wooden floor

A flash of remorse glides across your face

Instantly you turn around and head to the door

With one “so this is how it is” in your voice I hear disgrace

You are gone again, leaving me with another wound

  I get up
and wash the tears from my heart

Head outside to plant seeds in the ground

It is all that makes me forget the invisible dart

Even though I know you deceive me and hurt me

I still love you with my every being

The love I have for you made me blind to see

In front of others I pretend to be cleaning

I wait until you come home again and beg you to love

Leave the violence aside and make amends with your wife

Make me once again as it was before, your dove

Let us continue this violent love life

  The song called laughter

Laughter begins as a tingle in your stomach

Seeing the reason for this tingle makes you wriggle

It feels like the waves of an ocean on a stormy day

Rolling and weaving its way into your mind

Laughter moves through your veins and spreads like a virus

Covering the inside of your heart and captivating your soul

As it reaches your eyes, you feel the sound confirming the action

Your lips part and a short intake of breath before…

It sounds like harps being played by angel fingers

The light tingle of the laughter escaping from deep inside you

It makes me wonder what else you are hiding within your mind

Do you silently laugh at me behind my back?

Your mouth closes and the angel song ends in a wisp taken away by the wind

The reason for the laughter is standing in front of you

And you patiently wait for another wave of it to spread through you

I stand before you and wish the sound back

To hear you make your happiness known is what I want

I want you to give the angels reason to sing

Sing the song of laughter I wish to hear

Instead of spreading your wings and embracing me as I had hoped

You walk tight past me to another reason for your laughter

Behind me was the reason for your song

And here I stand and wonder

Do you silently laugh at me behind my back?

  To be a woman

A woman is the pillar on which life stands

She holds her family right in her hands

A woman is the softness of the clouds above the earth

While at the same time being as hard as bricks shoved into a hearth

A woman is the sun peering through the bleak sky

While suppressing tears she holds her head high

A woman is the bearer of children into the world

She will give her last blanket and stay cold

A woman is the strength of a thousand men

Even if she cannot pick up her heart from the floor

A woman is the hope of tomorrow

She will never stop believing that her loved ones can do it

A woman is a fine china doll crashing to the floor

Lays down for a while but gets back up to show the world

A woman is the first laughter coming from a baby’s lips
