Slowly our lives were blending together more and more. I loved our life together. And when we get too caught up in our business lives, we kindly give the other a gentle reminder of what is truly important.
When we got outside, I stopped and looked around. The deck was lit up with candles all over the rail and the floor. There were flowers, too. Turning around to ask Andrew what was going on, I found he had dropped to one knee.
I sucked in my breath and looked into his eyes. “Andrew, what is all this?”
“Anne, a few months ago I told you I wanted us to merge our lives. But I didn’t have a ring for you then.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a beautiful teardrop emerald ring and held it up. “Anne, I love you with all I am. Nothing would make me happier than if you would do me the honor of becoming my wife.”
I didn’t need to think about my answer. He was the love of my life, my soulmate, and the reason my heart beats.
“Yes, I’ll be your wife,” I said, fighting back tears.
Andrew slipped the ring onto my finger, and rose to kiss me. “I love you, Anne.”
“I love you too, Andrew.” I felt horrible for having made him wait when he had planned on proposing to me. I knew from that moment on, I’d be shutting my phone off at five and not keeping it off until morning.
A day lost is a day gone forever. I’m not willing to miss out on even one of them.
He handed me a glass of wine and said, “I’m glad you got off the phone. I was beginning to worry I might burn down the cabin by mistake. That might have killed the romantic mood I was going for.”
I put my glass down on the table and wrapped my arms around his neck. “Andrew, I don’t need candles, flowers, or a ring to set a mood. You’re the most caring, tender, and loving person I know. There is not a moment that goes by that I don’t feel loved, wanted, and appreciated. Nothing can be more romantic than that.”
“Anne, I am none of those things to anyone but to you,” he said.
Standing on tiptoe, I whispered, “That makes it all the more special. We save the best of ourselves for each other.” I kissed him gently and added, “And that’s another reason I love you.”
Andrew said, “If I list all the reasons I love you, we’ll never get to bed.”
“Then why don’t we blow out all these candles and head to bed now? You can show me instead,” I said, pressing my body closer and slowly grinding my hips against him. Instantly, his growing need became impossible to hide.
“Do you know what’s nice about living out in the middle of nowhere? No neighbors,” he winked, pulling me high into his arms and claiming my lips.
It didn’t matter where we were. When he kissed me, nothing in the world mattered except our love. One that grew stronger every day.
