A portrait of John Lloyd Stephens from an 1854 London reprint of Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatán. Frederick Catherwood put together an abridged version of Stephens’s account of their travels and added this portrait as a frontispiece, stating that it was from a daguerreotype of Stephens. The image was possibly taken by Catherwood himself during their 1842 expedition to Yucatán. As Stephens’s longtime traveling companion, Catherwood knew well what he looked like, so the portrait is likely one of the most accurate of those few that still exist. It captures an expression of fierce determination that Catherwood must have thought characterized his old friend, who had died two years earlier.

This indistinct image is the only known “portrait” of Frederick Catherwood in existence. Oddly, although he was well known to many artists during his lifetime, no other depictions of him have been found. Nor was he apparently given to self-portraiture, which has only added to an aura of mystery that has come to surround him. This image is enlarged from an illustration he made of the Maya ruins at Tulum in Yucatán. He is shown holding a tape as he and Stephens are measuring the length of the stone structure, their figures used merely to give the viewer a sense of perspective to indicate the size of the building.

The illustrations on the following fourteen pages are taken from Frederick Catherwood’s View of Ancient Monuments in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatán, which he published in oversize folio in London and New York in 1844. Catherwood created only 300 such folios, each with 25 lithographed plates, of which 250 were tinted light blue or brown. The 50 remaining folios, illustrations from which are displayed here and are today extremely rare, were hand colored.
