The Knight Mage

  “Your sister is still there” Jonathan said weakly.

  John went to turn around and could see five other mages in the sky. “She is behind us” John replied. “We can fight these guys another time, how long has this been going on?”

  “A day” Jonathan replied.

  “Well I am going to get you fixed up” John replied.

  “I have to go back there and fight” Jonathan said as he winced from the pain. “I am a big reason more of our people haven't died.

  “Not in that condition” John replied. “You look like you barely have any magic father. Thank you for saving my life by the way”.

  “I have struck that green bastard four times head on and it always survived” Jonathan said. “I saw him about to bite you and used what I had to get in the air and line up my shot, his open mouth was what I needed. I hope I fried that fucking lizard from the inside”.

  EPILOUGUE

  John walked up to Dawn, she was still angry at him for waiting two weeks until he saw her again after abandoning her to go fight. The war was all but over, the Downey were deep inside of their lands licking their wounds after their failed attack. Most of their leadership had been killed during John’s initial attack, those that remained were killed soon after thanks to the craftiness displayed by General Burns. Jonathan the Lightning was badly burned but the remaining mages were able to heal the worst of it, Burns had Jonathan lead the majority of the mages in nighttime raids of the Downey army, targeting the Downey leadership and the buildings the dragons were kept in. During the day John had his fake dragon flying around except he had two mages now hidden in the mouth, John’s fake dragon kept the Downey from using their superior numbers to overwhelm the remnants of the Kirby army. John had not fought with any of the Downey dragons, he found it easier to just run away before they took to the sky. The Downey dragons eventually left the field, the weather was too much for them and the Downey became really vulnerable. General Burns then led his small army against the numerically superior Downey and scored a decisive victory, the Downey had no defense for the remaining mages and soon started retreating. General Burns showed them no mercy, every prisoner was killed and Burns drove deep into Downey and even took over a sizable city in the name of the Queen of Kirby. John had left then to find his woman who along with the Knights had cleaned out many of the small towns along the border.

  “You still mad at me?” John asked.

  “Yes” Dawn said as she folded her arms.

  “You know crossing your arms does nothing but prop your breasts up?” John replied as Dawn looked at him shocked.

  “Stop trying to sweet talk me” Dawn said angrily. “Your father almost died. Jonathan the Lightning was almost killed and now has horrible scars, he is our greatest hero. You were lucky you weren’t killed”.

  “My Da was there” John replied. “He wouldn’t let me die, he is the original dragon slayer”.

  “You better not do anything like that ever again” Dawn replied. “I just got you and now you are trying to get yourself killed. Where is your banner at?”

  “Burned” John replied. “Dragon fire is difficult to put out once it hits you”.

  “I am happy you are safe John” Dawn replied. “My cousin, how is he?”

  “Angry” John replied. “He helped kill off most of the Downey leadership during the initial attack but was unconscious for the beginning of the nighttime attacks on the dragons. By the time he was ready to fight again the Downey were already retreating. My father and I got most of the credit, I will of course let everyone know his role in the fight but I don’t think it will matter”.

  “What are we going to do now?” Dawn asked.

  “Well I still have to bring my father home to my mother” John replied. “She won't be thrilled at his appearance with all the scarring but he did help save an army and kept both of his children alive. This was the first time I have actually seen the famed Jonathan the Lightning. He only came because Sara was coming to the border. I am a poor copy of him, I am glad to call him my father and I know my mother will love him even more than she does now when the full story gets out”.

  “Where is your father?” Dawn asked.

  “Still with the army and waiting for a Downey counterattack” John replied. “I am going to bring him back but I wanted to get you and Shadow first”.

  “Your horse is getting easier to deal with” Dawn replied. “He still snaps at me but at least he lets me feed him”.

  “I hope he is okay with flying” John replied. “We still need to report back on the cleansing to the Knight Commander. I had no part in it but you did and you will have to write my part. Too bad no one caught up to the woman in the yellow dress”.

  “We looked for her” Dawn replied. “People saw her after your fight a few times and there was even a rumor she had another dragon”.

  “Well I doubt she will be back for a while” John replied. “Are you ready to go?”
