“Oh God, let’s get to the truck,” I say. “Sit back in the wheel-“ I’m interrupted by more howling from Camille.
“I don’t think…I don’t think I’m going to make it,” she gasps. “Call an ambulance.”
I suddenly realize we’re forty minutes from civilization. I dial 911 and by the time I’m done with the call, Camille is crouching on the ground, groaning.
“You want to get in the tub?” I ask her.
She nods. I help her out of her clothes and get her into the warm water of the bathtub. She’s able to relax.
“This is much better…er…er…ooooow!” she screams again.
“What’s wrong?” I ask.
“The contractions are too close together, Blake. I think you’re going to have to – yeeeow!” My knuckles pop as she squeezes my fingers together.
“I can do this,” I say to her. “I’ve been watching so much Grey’s Anatomy while Hazel naps, you wouldn’t even believe it.”
She pants and groans.
“Just…do it, I’ve gotta push, Blake. I have to push.”
I brush her hair off her forehead. “I’m not going anywhere. I’m right here. Everything is going to be okay.”
And it was.
CHAPTER FIFTY-ONE
CAMILLE
Blake helps me into the shower after the paramedics leave and give us the all clear. It’s all I can do to just stand there and let the water pour down me. He wraps me up in a bathrobe and helps me into bed. The twins are in duelling bassinets beside me.
“They’re so beautiful,” I say to him.
“I bet they’re smart, too. Just like their mom.”
I grab Remy’s hand and she squeezes it tightly.
“She’s got a strong grip.”
“Also just like her mother,” Blake says. “I thought you were going to snap my fingers off back there.”
I laugh.
“Sorry about that.”
Blake leans over and kisses me.
“You look so fucking beautiful right now,” he says.
I blush.
“You’re lying.”
“You’re glowing,” he insists. He checks his watch. “Hazel and Eloise should be here soon.”
“Blake?”
“Yeah?”
“Can we stay here?” I ask him. “I don’t even want to go back to my dad’s house. This feels so much more like home than his place ever did.”
Blake smiles at me.
“Your wish is my command. Half your clothes are already here; same for Hazel. Eloise has had her bags packed for weeks now in anticipation. We’ve got everything we need right here.”
“I know I have everything I need right here,” I say. “As long as you’re here with me.”
Blake leans over and kisses me. “I feel the exact same way.”
