"I will. Thank you. When are you going back to Miami?"
"I don't know. I'm torn. I talked to a listing agent today, but I couldn't go through with putting the house up for sale. There are so many memories here. Besides, this place kind of grows on you. I don't know. I may stay in Coconut Key for a little while." She had a cheery tone in her voice. "Anyway, I think I owe you a few beers. Let me know when you want to collect."
I smiled and said goodbye. She didn’t owe me anything, but I was happy to have a few beers with her anytime.
Things were starting to settle down in Coconut Key. But I knew it wouldn’t stay that way. Daniels had picked up his father from Texas and put him in a facility that we all thoroughly researched beforehand. He had a tough road ahead, but at least his father was close by and was in good care.
Scarlett called. There was a tone in her voice that I hadn't heard in a long time. "Hey, I’ve got someone who wants to talk to you."
Jack's voice blared through the speakerphone. "It's official. I'm invincible. Nothing can kill me!"
I breathed a sigh of relief. "It's good to hear your voice!”
"Man, I had the craziest dreams."
"Well, you were in a medically induced coma."
"The last couple weeks are like a black hole. Scarlett told me somebody took a crowbar to my head, but I don't remember a thing. I'm guessing the crowbar got bent on this thick noggin." He paused. "I just need to know one thing... Did we get who we were after?"
"I'll fill you in on all the details." I told him I would get to the hospital to visit shortly. When I hung up the phone, I let out a deep breath. A huge weight had been lifted. It was good to know I still had a best friend.
