She shows a weak smile. “All right.”
“And who knows?” I nudge her chin. “Maybe he’ll continue our cool tradition and he’ll meet some girl around here in twenty-five years. That’ll be fun, right?”
Hazel laughs. “Maybe.”
I kiss her forehead and she leans in to hug me. “Love you,” I say.
“I love you, too,” she says. She turns up and I kiss her lips. “Think I’ll go back to bed now.”
“I’ll go with you.”
“Don’t you need to finish?” she asks.
“There’s still plenty of time.”
I flick off the light and take her hand to walk her out into the hall. Pearl lingers there, patiently waiting for Hazel like the good guard she is. She knew Hazel was pregnant before I did, I think. One day, she just stopped jumping up on her and all rough hits with her paws were reserved for me only.
She gets up and slowly follows us up the stairs.
Hazel gets into bed and I fluff up her pillows before she lays back. “Thank you,” she says.
“Need anything else?” I ask.
“No.” She shakes her head and extends a hand. “Just my husband.”
I slide in beside her and she rests her head on my shoulder. “Goodnight, Hazel.”
“Goodnight, Leo,” she says.
I lay a hand on her belly. “Goodnight, Lucas.”
Hazel entwines our fingers and smiles.
