“Any damage to the Formation?” Sherri asked the mutants as she absently rubbed the cast covering her broken right arm. She sat in a chair in the central exam table. She had come out their adventure at the Aris Tech base the worst of them all. Although at the time she thanked Adam for causing the fall that broke her arm, all she did now was blame him for it. He knew it was all in good-hearted jest … or was it? With Sherri Valentine, it was hard to tell.
“The Formation is intact,” Lila reported. “As is the Code device.”
“That’s … fortunate,” Adam said sarcastically.
After defeating both Stimmel and Kanan, the team was hustled away from the Aris facility while the mutants set to work dismantling the Formation, along with anything else they found worthy in the complex. Adam figured that included quantum anchor technology. Panur and Lila tried to explain to him more about how it worked, but like most things involving the mutants, it went over his head. But at the moment, be was more concerned about the Formation. “You really intend to keep that thing around? You know what it can do.”
Lila smiled. “Yes, we do, and that is why it must be preserved. The Formation is a wondrous device, capable of phenomenal achievements,” she began. “It not only creates and manipulates life, but it can manufacture any biological material required, be it cures to diseases or regenerative cells and organs. Through it, life in the galaxy can become stronger, hardier and healthier. And those are just some of the possibilities.”
“But that is not what we will use it for,” Panur said. “It is but one unit, and the time required to create a galaxy worth of compounds extends into the millions of years. As a result, we cannot let the galaxy know that such a device exists, otherwise there would be countless pleas for its use. Some would receive its benefits, while others wouldn’t, and that would cause conflict. It’s better to keep its existence and function a secret, and safely stored away … until time to seed the galaxy with life once again.”
“And I suppose the two of you expect to be around to supervise the seeding?” Riyad said, flashing his trademark white smile at the pair.
Panur frowned. Adam thought the expression was strange.
“Unfortunately, that may not happen.”
“What do you mean?” Adam asked. When Panur was worried, it was time for everyone else to panic.
“There’s a new mystery brewing in the galaxy, one that Lila and I are anxious to investigate. It may be a result of the Lerpiniere effect or something else entirely. But it definitely deserves our scrutiny.”
“What is it?”
Panur shook his head. “At the moment, it’s just a concept, but it could grow into something quite … interesting, if not extremely dangerous. We shall see. We call it The Quantum Enigma.”
