As for Susan, I had no idea if she was under orders from Martinez or working on her own to undermine my success and take some credit herself. I decided not to dwell on that. If I judged my successes and failures by commendations, I was in this for the wrong reasons. If she had stepped over the line this time, maybe I couldn’t prove it, but I was sure there would be a next time, and I would be watching for it.
I took a last sip and set the glass on the table. Justine did the same and we fell into each other’s arms. As I leaned in to kiss her, I realized that maybe I had finally learned to separate business from pleasure.
