“The changes we need aren’t going to come from the actions of a few anonymous Naturals and Magics working behind the scenes. Real change will only come when we’re all ready to stand together against evil. Because our city isn’t what makes us strong. It’s the people who live here.”
Pausing, I looked straight into the camera.
“I’m confident we’re all ready to set aside old fears and prejudices in exchange for something more…something we can all truly call our own. A future that will inspire the rest of the world. A future that we’ll be proud to show off to our children.”
I looked at Kai, whose eyes were shining with pride in me.
For all the ways life was about to get even more complicated, I felt a tremendous sense of peace. I was surrounded by a family I’d chosen, and who had chosen me. And I had Kai. No matter what came next, I knew I wouldn’t have to face it alone.
I had a desperate urge to take Kai in my arms and kiss her right then. So I did just that…because I wanted to, and because she was my goddamn girlfriend. And there in our living room, with the whole country watching, she kissed me back.

Stephanie Fazio is a fantasy author. She grew up in Syracuse, New York, and prior to writing full time, she worked in the fields of journalism, secondary education, and higher education. She has an undergraduate degree in English from Colgate University and a Master’s degree in Reading, Writing, and Literacy from the University of Pennsylvania. Stephanie lives in Austin with her husband and crazy rescue dog.
