I shook my head, holding my breath while he accepted that, then watched each line of his dearest face break into joy—the sun emerging from the storm.
“Ours,” he repeated as he leaned in to touch his lips to mine. “I hope it has your red ears.”
For the first time in nearly a fortnight I laughed.
“Half mortal, half fae—a wild child of Britain. Unique in this world.” The thought seemed to please him.
But it wasn’t true.
“There is one other,” I told him. “A secret child, true. Nearly a woman now. Half-sister to the man you’d make your king.”
“Arthur?”
I nodded. “Her name is Morgan.”
“You’ve met her?”
“When she was but a babe. Even then we knew the Old Magic ran strong in her. When the time is right and her heritage proclaimed once Arthur sits the throne, she will be the bridge between our divided lands of the past and the united one of the future.”
“How do you know this?”
“The seer Merlin predicted at cradle-side that hers will be a pivotal role in the new king’s reign. Not only accepted for what she is—Morgan the Fae—but a powerful force in the coming history of Britain.”
Alain smiled wide at the idea. “I want that legacy for our child too.” His face suddenly clouded. “Could we have kept him here with the news?”
“Your brother’s fate was decided long before this moment. I think it would have been an extra sorrow in this world for him to leave this child behind. He has sorrow enough now to bear.”
“As do we,” Alain said. “But you have managed to temper my sorrow with the greatest joy. How can I ever thank you enough for being here, for being you, for being us?”
I put my lips to his, so close his breath was mine and mine his.
“By being mine, for now and always, my heart.”
He swept his arms around me and crushed me to his chest.
“Always and ever,” he agreed. Then sealed his vow with much, much more than a simple kiss.
