For my ancestors: you are all in this story.
For the Institute’s first class:
For Jane, who got this book down to fighting weight.
And most of all for Katie, who makes everything seem possible.

This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places, and incidents either are the product of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, business establishments, events, or locales is entirely coincidental. If we shadows have offended, think but this, and all is mended, that you have but slumber’d here while these visions did appear, and this weak and idle theme no more yielding but a dream.
No scientists were harmed in the making of this book.
