Then it would be over.
Ben trapped and deflected the hand holding the gun. The blast seared his face but the bullet went wide. Now Ben twisted the weapon from Saunders’ grip and let it fall to the ground. Saunders wobbled on his feet and started to fall, but Ben caught him and held him upright. Face to face.
Then Ben jammed the barrel of his own pistol under Saunders’ chin.
‘This is for Grace,’ he said. And pulled the trigger.
Ben did not wait to watch the dead man crumple to the ground. He turned towards the burning house. Tossed away his gun and started walking back to meet his friends.
Wolf was smiling his golden smile. Jeff put a hand on Ben’s shoulder. ‘We’re done?’ Jeff asked.
‘We’re never done,’ Ben said.
