      But there would be time enough to find that out, too, she thought; meanwhile Missy could use a friend.

      And so could I, Lizzie thought. So, absolutely, could I.

      Heading back to the office in Bearkill, she passed children out sledding, their snowsuits bright as gumdrops as they zipped downhill.

      A man trudging across an open field shouldered a shotgun. Dogs romped by a fence. A red tractor pulled a long wagon with hay bales stacked on it.

      And over it all loomed the Great North Woods: vast, silent. As she swung around the long curve into town past the old potato barn, her radio sputtered.

      “All units …”

      She pressed the handset button and answered.
