‘Quiet,’ he ordered. ‘Jordan, will you be my wife?’
‘Yes. Now please get up!’ As she helped him to his feet, his arm wrapped around her, pulling her close.
‘You said yes,’ he commented, kissing her gently.
‘Were you worried?’ she asked with a grin, then held her breath when he slid the ring onto her finger. ‘When did you get it?’
‘It was my grandmother’s. Let’s celebrate.’ He nuzzled her neck as his fingers slid under her shirt.
Jordan giggled, feeling happier than she ever had in her life. ‘Reid, we can’t.’ She shivered as his teeth caught her ear. ‘Everyone will be here soon and your wound…’
‘We have time. And do you honestly think that would stop me?’
‘Ooh, come on then, tough guy.’
‘I like it when you call me cowboy. Actually, GI Joe didn’t hurt the ego either.’
‘I’ve got another one.’
‘What is it?’
She whispered in his ear, and he laughed as he pulled her towards the bedroom. ‘Now there’s something to live up to…princess.’
At the bottom of the stairs, a goose took up residence on a new nest. In the distance, brown and white cattle grazed lazily, while sheep occasionally tested fences for holes to greener pastures. In another paddock, a horse tossed its head and trotted into the shade of the grey gums bordering the creek.
Mack stretched, took note of the goings on and, happy everything was as it should be, closed his eyes on a contented sigh and slept in the sun.
