“I love it!”
“Thank you for saying yes; I know you want to wait until you’re done with college, and I’m fine with that. I just wanted to know we’re ready for that next step whenever the time is right. I’ll wait forever if it means I get to spend the rest of my life with you.”
“Maybe we can plan for late June in two years. That will be after I graduate, a little after the season ends, but before I’d start residency.”
“Pick a date, tell me where to show up, and I’ll be there,” I tell her honestly. “I don’t care when or where; I just want to marry you.”
“I know,” she says, running her fingers through my hair.
“Okay, that’s enough, you two; show us the ring!” Emily says, tugging on Hailey’s arm. I set her down, laughing at my soon-to-be sister-in-law's antics.
Hailey is beaming as she shows off the ring. She keeps looking over at me, giving me a look that is just for me, one that holds so much promise. Promise for what’s in store for us tonight, in the next week, and for years to come. I flash her our symbolic I love you sign, noticing right away how her eyes light up as she returns the gesture from where she stands.
This past season might have been my rookie move on the ice, my shot at my dream job, but Hailey saying yes to forever was my best shot yet.
