He turned to Larson and said, “Everything looks wonderful. Thank you for letting us have the wedding here in Raspberry Hall. We thought about having it at Oceanview, but this is the place where we first met and it’s special to us.”
Larson smiled. “At first I thought it was weird. I like daylight. But now I’m glad you and Sienna decided on a midnight wedding.”
Avenir smiled. When he was with Sienna, it was always daylight. “It was Sienna’s idea.”
A few minutes later, the reggae band stopped playing. The leader lifted his arms high, then dropped them fast. Then the band started to play a tropical version of “Here Comes the Bride” and everyone stood and turned toward the back of the house. Grace walked slowly through the French doors. She wore a blue silk gown and she was carrying a large bouquet of white roses with white satin ribbons that trailed down to her knees. Then Sienna crossed through the doors. She was carrying a larger bouquet of white roses and she was smiling at the guests.
Avenir felt something rub against his leg. When he looked down, Latte looked up at him, tipped his head to the side, and meowed. Then Avenir lifted his head and saw that Sienna was now smiling at him instead of the guests. Her face was glowing and she was looking directly into his eyes. For the first time since his human life had been taken and he’d become a vampire, he felt like a twenty-year-old again. All the hopes and promises he’d once dreamed of with Adriana were about to come true with Sienna. But Sienna was his future, not his past. She was the woman with whom he’d build a life he’d never dreamed he could have.
When she was standing before him, he reached out for her hand and smiled. He couldn’t wait to see the expression on her face when he surprised her with his wedding gift. She had no idea that he’d already purchased a wonderful new home in Portland, where they would live together as husband and wife so she could work on her law degree without having to commute to Mt. Desert Island every day. And on weekends, they would spend their time in Oceanview, cuddled in front of a roaring fire, fulfilling the promises of their sacred wedding vows for as long as time would allow.
