Spencer spoke. “What did my brother do for you to make you take us all in?”
“I would have taken you in anyway. Roman just let me know to expect you.” He sighed. “I was caught. I’d almost made it over the border into Mexico. I was about to take the final steps. Not that I wouldn’t have had to fight my way through Mexico, but at least it wouldn’t have been the world-famous Fury. A hand grabbed my shoulder. It was Roman. He told me who he was. I thought I was done. Then he let me go and explained to me the rules of where the Fury could and could not go. That was how I found this place. He also gave me twenty thousand dollars.”
Addison looked up at the large houses on the hill. “Looks like you’ve made more than that to afford all of this.”
“Yes, we’ve made some good calls money-wise, but we could use more. Can you help us with that, Addison?”
She smiled. Between her natural ability to turn one dollar into a hundred every time she tried and the accounts she’d hidden all over the world, she was certain she could do that. “I think I could help with that.”
“And if we don’t want to fight?” Spencer voiced the question she’d held on her tongue. It wasn’t likely that Laurel, for example, was going to want to participate in violence.
“As long as you’re loyal, the fighting can be left to other people.”
Spencer regarded her seriously, running his hands through her hair in the way that made her shiver and sweat. “I think we’ve reached our destination.” Looking back at the boat, Spencer motioned for everyone to get off.
“You know you’ve all been declared dead,” Guy said in passing. “You’re not going to be transferring funds—we’re going to need you to use that Wade brain and invest our money until we have your kind of money.
“I can do that, I promise.” She took a deep breath, confused. “That’s good, right, that we’re dead?” That meant they were free.
“It depends. Spencer, explain it to your woman.” With that, Guy turned his back on them and walked toward the boat. He still hadn’t shaken their hands.
Turning around like he could read their thoughts, he grinned. “I can’t shake hands, sorry. I’d rather not know everything about you. As it is, I know too much.”
Addison regarded Spencer, her arms slipping into their natural position around his waist. “What does it mean that we’re dead?”
“It means the Fury will make us that way if they catch us. No one comes back from the dead.”
“Spence…”
Concern filled his swirling blue eyes. “Regretting your decision?”
How could he even think that? Some day he would be confident and wouldn’t wonder if he was worthy or if she was going to leave. It would just take time. She would wait.
“Don’t be ridiculous. What I wanted to say is that now that I’m dead, I’d really rather not be Addison Wade anymore.”
“You want to change your name?” He looked so confused she almost laughed.
Men were so clueless.
“I want to change my last name.”
He shook his head. “To what?”
“Lewis.”
Understanding dawned fast in his eyes. “Oh. It never occurred to me to ask. The Conditioned can’t get married.”
“So does that mean you want to?”
He grinned. “Hey, Guy,” he called, “anyone ever get married here?”
Addison laughed. Whatever happened now, she had Spencer, and they were finally somewhere that no one would keep them apart. Even if there was fighting to do, they would do it together.
Looking at Spencer, she saw her whole future—love, laughter, tears, promises and babies—float back to her in his eyes. She’d found herself, even though she hadn’t known she’d been lost.
Why was she surprised? Spencer found lost people. He was good at it.
She kissed his hand.
Life was good like it had never been before.
Epilogue
The new rules did not come as a surprise to the general population. The committee was relieved about that. After all, under Oliver Wade’s direction, the committee had all but created panic about Addison’s declaration and the destruction of Safe Dawn.
This time the notices went out via email and internet chat boards.
To Whom It May Concern:
New Rules to the management and handling of the Condition:
Any person caught with the Condition outside institution walls will be executed on sight.
All female Conditioned will be sterilized at the age of twenty and any Conditioned woman found pregnant before then will be executed.
The life span of the Conditioned will be terminated at the age of forty.
The Fury is real, and They are watching you.
Only people given particular permission, written consent of the committee, will be allowed to hire the services of the Conditioned for their personal use.
These rules are for your safety.
Do Not Disobey.
And the world watched, again. Only this time, the Resistance on a small island in the Caribbean Sea had other plans. Things would change. Soon.
