THE TAROT
The Tarot is a picture book expressing the principals and precepts
of an ancient spiritual tradition. Its symbolism leads the individual
human consciousness to develop a relationship with the Root
Consciousness, which is best described in the words of the modern
philosopher Terrence McKenna as being “A Consciousness which
is resident in Nature and inhabits the planet along with you”and
through this relationship actively self evolve and become a willing
participant in the creative work that sustains Life and moves it
forward towards the realization of its inherent evolutionary
destiny. For any human individual the Tarot is both a valuable
method of self development and a reliable spiritual “compass”that
will keep their consciousness headed in the right direction as they
struggle to navigate their individual course through the often
mysterious waters of earthly life. To those who aspire to a higher
life of service it also serves as a most valuable tool when used to
aid other human beings who have reached an impasse or a point of
uncertainty or confusion on their individual journey through life.
THE PURPOSE OF THIS WORK
This work will approach the Waite-Smith Tarot from the twin
perspectives of its intended usage as revealed by the Adepts of the
Golden Dawn. These two perspectives comprise: 1) A method of
psychological development through which any sincere individual
who studies and meditates upon Tarot symbolism can undertake a
life of accelerated self evolution through which their inner Creative
Self is liberated to fulfill a meaningful role in shaping the destiny
of the world. 2) A trustworthy Oracle which reveals the hidden
reality, previously unknown information or valuable insights in
answers to questions put to it thus bringing clarity to confusing
situations encountered in the many theaters of human experience.
This work will not fall into the error of interpreting the Tarot in the
light of philosophies or viewpoints which are essentially foreign to
it and often only serve to promote the ideas of their respective
authors.

While these comparisons and parallel interpretations can be
intellectually stimulating and worthy of study in their own right,
what this practice ultimately does is shift understanding away from
what the Tarot actually is and towards the perspective being put
forth while leaving the actual meanings of the Tarot cards and their
spiritual viewpoint lost somewhere in a vast fog of words which
often have little or no relation to the card’s actual symbolism or
historical correspondences. In studying the Tarot, we should bear
in mind the wise words of Dr. Arthur Edward Waite who
supervised the creation of the Waite-Smith Tarot, “The Tarot did
not come to us with an instruction manual from the hands of its
creator(s) … .it brings to us only its symbolism and nothing more.”
This work will approach the Tarot from the perspective of its
symbolism and it’
s valid historical correspondences and attempt to
convey the knowledge of it’
s correct usage as a contextual “Mirror
of the Moment”whose purpose is to illuminate the present of life
and offer some hint as to where the road is going – and not the
specific scenery of the road’
s destination - which can be speculated
on but ultimately cannot be known. Approached in this manner the
Tarot may be studied on its own and used to evolve the personality
or if the individual is so inclined may be used in divination to cast
a revealing light on the mysteries and difficulties encountered in
life. The symbolism of the Tarot reveals an integrated and holistic
spiritual philosophy complete within itself and does not require an
external viewpoint in order to be completely and correctly
understood or applied in human affairs. The magic of the Tarot i
s
that it brings knowledge of the highest spiritual principals and
practices to “everyman”through the symbolism of its images. It
might well be said that one of the principal reasons the Tarot was
created as a “picture book”was so those who had no access to
the education necessary to acquire the skills of reading and writing
could also enhance their lives through the acquisition of this sacred
knowledge as communicated to them through visual images, which
are the most elemental foundation of the living Psyche as anyone
who has attained the knowledge of dreams can attest.

The Tarot was not created for use by an elitist intellectual circle
but rather for the benefit of all mankind. Thus perhaps the most
fundamental issue surrounding the Tarot is how to apply its
efficacy to the actual human condition in such a manner that it
serves human welfare and not intellectual snobbery, business,
money or materialism. Money taints all that it touches. When
money is involved there is always the need to please the customer
and to tell them what they want to hear so they will not be reluctant
to pay or question the payment. Selling dreams or making people
feel comfortable does not lie at the heart of spiritual practice –
revealing the truth lies at its heart - so people may become aware
of Truth and act upon it - thus bettering their lives and
circumstances. If a woman asks you when she will meet her soul
mate and you tell her “this coming June”(something that would be
impossible for you to know) she will gladly fork over her money
and walk away satisfied but if you tell her that she will have to
change her materialistic attitude if she is to have any chance of a
soul level relationship, she will get in a huff and ask, “What am I
paying you for?”and storm away. Do not read for money if you
can earn a living through other means. Do you ask for a donation
when you give food to a starving man? Those individuals who are
seeking insight from the Tarot (spiritual food) should be viewed
from the same perspective. If you absolutely have no other choice
and must use your skills to earn an income as you have no other
