Jessica studied him, and sensed there was more he wanted to say.
“Tanner, is something on your mind?”
Tanner hesitated, but then spoke.
“On the ride to the O’Grady ranch, you asked me if my last name was Gant.”
“Yes?” Jessica said.
“It’s not, but Gant was my mother’s maiden name.”
Mr. White stared at Tanner with his mouth parted slightly in shock.
“Tanner, my father was a man named Billy Gant. He was rumored to have had an older sister, although I don’t know her name, but my mother had been told that the girl ran off to escape her family. The Gants were not good people.”
Tanner nodded.
“My mother never talked about her family... she died when I was eight.”
They all grew silent, but then Jessica let out a little laugh.
“So it’s possible that you two are cousins, well, that would explain the resemblance.”
Tanner put his car in gear and sent them a wave.
“Goodbye cousins, until next time.”
Jessica and her husband watched him go, while both had the feeling that they had not seen the last of Tanner.
