Laurel smiled, and then she pointed at the refrigerated case behind the counter where desserts were on display.
“Why don’t we share a piece of chocolate cake?”
Joe smiled at his future wife. “Why not? You only live once.”

Tanner had been watching Joe and Laurel from the other side of the terminal and wondered how well they knew each other.
He could see them through the glass window of the coffee shop and came to the conclusion that they were just friends.
He wanted to walk over to Laurel, to talk to her, but knew that there was little point to it. He’d walked out on that relationship for a reason and that reason hadn’t changed.
He was a loner and Laurel wanted someone she could rely on to always be there for her. The thought of making such a commitment brought more trepidation to Tanner’s heart than Smith and his terror sect ever had.
Still, here it was Christmas Day and he was all alone.
He turned away from Laurel and Joe and began walking. His flight back to Las Vegas would be boarding soon.
As he neared his terminal, he paused and leaned back against a wall. There was nothing but a hotel suite awaiting him in Vegas, and whether it was the holiday or seeing Laurel again, he didn’t want to be alone.
Tanner took out his phone, searched his memory, and dialed a number.
When the call was picked up, Tanner felt a strange sense of relief.
“Hello?”
“It’s me, Spenser.”
“Merry Christmas to you, Cody.”
“Merry Christmas, what are you up to?”
“Not a damn thing, boy. My new girlfriend flew back to California to see her mom.”
“What’s the new girlfriend’s name?”
“Amy, and she’s special. This one may last.”
Tanner said nothing, and Spenser called his name.
“Cody, you still there?”
“Yeah, and how’d you like some company for a few days?”
“Are you kidding? I’d love it, and you’ve got great timing, Romeo and Nadya are coming here in two days.”
Tanner smiled into the phone. He hadn’t seen Romeo and Nadya in a while.
Spenser asked a question.
“Where are you coming from, Cody?”
“New York City.”
“Great, boy, and I can’t wait to see you.”
“Same here, Spenser. I’ll call you when I land.”
Tanner went about the not inconsiderable task of changing his air travel plans during the height of the holiday season, but in the end, he arranged to be in Wyoming by nine p.m.
As the airline employee handed Tanner the ticket for his flight, the young woman smiled at him.
“Have a good trip, sir.”
“I will,” Tanner said. “I’m going home.”
