As the two shifters went back to their treasure, Jason handed the flashlight to Nigel. “Why don’t you watch over these two and then Lorcan can take you back down the mountain on his back?”
“What about you two?” Nigel asked as he wrapped his hand around the flashlight.
“We’re going to walk back to the truck,” Jason glanced at Shannon. “If you want to.”
“I like nothing better than walking down this mountain.” She gave him a brief smile and took hold of his hand. “As long as I’m with you.”
Jason led Shannon through the dark tunnel and out into the cave. Using his senses, he headed for the cave entrance and they slipped through the narrow gap and out into the late evening light. The sun had almost set, and the sky was turning inky blue above their heads as one by one the stars came out.
“Now, this is romantic,” Shannon told him as they stood hand in hand and looked at the sky and the view of the mountain below them.
“This is the mountain I want to show you, Shannon. This is the mountain I want you to fall in love with.” He turned to face her. To Jason, his mate shone brighter than any star.
“Just as I’ve fallen in love with you,” Shannon told him as she slipped her arms around his shoulders.
“I’ve waited so long to hear my mate say those words. And it was worth every agonizing minute.” He lifted his hand and stroked her hair back from her face. “I love you more than any treasure in all the world.”
With that, Jason kissed his mate. As their lips met under the starry sky, Jason finally let go of his past. But he would always be a Silverback Savior.
Although, tonight, as he held his mate in his arms, Jason truly believed he was the one who had been finally saved.
Epilogue
“Good morning.” Jason kissed his wife on the shoulder as the sun crested the horizon and chased the night away.
“Morning?” Shannon asked as she lifted her head from the pillow and stared at the window. “It’s still night.”
“I’m sorry, I should have let you sleep.” He slipped his arms around her waist and pulled her close, cradling her in his arms. “But I didn’t want to leave without saying goodbye.”
Shannon yawned and snuggled into him. “I’d like a long hello, first.”
Jason nuzzled her neck and inhaled her scent. She drove him crazy, the sight of her, the smell of her, the touch of her hands. Every morning that he woke up with Shannon next to him was a blessing and he would be eternally grateful for this chance to be part of her life, part of her family.
“You are beautiful.” He kissed her neck while his hand cupped her breast. Grazing her nipple with his thumb elicited a sharp intake of breath from his mate and she writhed against him. Each movement of her body excited him, and his hard length pressed against her back, leaving her in no doubt of his arousal.
“You say that when the sun is hardly up and you can’t see me,” she told him. “You can’t see my bed hair or my blotchy face or my…”
His lips cut off her next words. She was the most beautiful creature in the world. Perfect just the way she was no matter what time of day. His love for her was endless.
Shannon rolled over in his arms and slipped her leg over his thigh, pressing herself closer to him and circling her hips. He grew harder, impossibly harder as she teased him with her body and her mouth. Her tongue slipped along his lower lip, soft and sensuous, before she nipped the sensitive skin. He groaned and broke their kiss.
Pushing the bedspread aside, he ducked his head and captured her nipple with his mouth. Rolling his tongue around and around the taut bud, he drove Shannon to the edge of insanity. This was the game they played, who could make the other crazier. She usually won. No, she always won, because he craved her like a drug.
As his mouth tortured her nipple, she reached down between their bodies and curled her hand around his hard length. Up and down she stroked him, taking his arousal higher and higher.
Jason closed his eyes. At times like this it would be easy to think he’d fallen into a dream. But she was real, here beside him in his bed.
Shannon guided him into her, and he thrust forward, filling her with his hardness. Deeper and deeper, he buried himself inside her. Shannon’s inner walls gripped him as he pulled his hips back and then thrust forward, impaling her. She gasped and her hips bucked as he took her.
She nuzzled his neck, her breath warm as his skin tingled with pleasure. Pleasure that spread throughout his body as she stroked his flesh, tempting him, teasing him, taking him to new heights.
Jason licked her nipple, lapping at the taut bud and her inner muscles tensed in response, tipping him over the edge. His orgasm hit him like a storm over the mountains, tumultuous and incredibly powerful. His thighs tensed as his seed spurted into her, deep into her, and his perpetual hope that they would one day conceive a child hit him as hard as his orgasm.
Shannon came. Her inner walls gripped him, pulsing around his hardness as she whimpered in his ear. Jason’s arms tightened around her and he cradled her against him.
Two mates joined together, mind, body and soul.
“You really are a Silverback Savior.” Shannon threaded her arms around his neck and held him close. “At least, you saved me.”
Jason kissed her lips as his orgasm subsided. “I have a feeling you would have found a way to save yourself. You’re a resourceful woman, Shannon.”
“But this way is much more fun.” She pressed herself closer to him. “I can’t believe how lucky I am to have found you.”
“I love you more than life itself.” Jason stroked her hair back from her damp cheek.
“I love you, Jason. So very, very much.” She kissed his shoulder. “I love this life we’ve built together.”
Jason held her while the sun rose higher in the sky. But he had to go. He had other commitments. Commitments to the Silverback Saviors and the people they had promised to help.
“You need to get going,” Shannon said as she leaned forward and kissed his back. “You don’t want to be late.”
“Thank you for being so understanding.” Jason pulled his shirt over his head before he turned around and wrapped his arms around her. “I hate leaving you.”
“But right now, you need to be with your friends doing what you do best.” She smiled. “I’m meeting with the other wives this morning.”
“To talk about us men?” Jason chuckled. “I’m sure you have a lot to complain about. Out all hours, never home when they say they’re going to be…”
“Ah, you all get away with it since it’s not as if you are out drinking or gambling. Although, I did hear you all got a little drunk on Mac’s moonshine a while back.” Shannon laughed. “Four drunk bears coming home across the mountains. It was quite a tale.”
“Don’t believe everything you are told. We’re all upstanding members of the community.” He pulled away from Shannon and finished dressing, although he kept one eye on his mate. He’d keep two eyes on her, but he’d likely end up with mismatched socks and buttons done up wrong.
“We’re going shopping for last-minute things for Petra’s baby.” The tone of her voice changed, and she swung her legs out of the covers and sat on the edge of the bed.
“Hey, we’ll get there.” Jason went back to his wife and knelt down in front of her, his hands clasped around hers.
Shannon put her hand over her stomach and rubbed it as she lifted her eyes to his. “I think we might already be there.”
His eyes widened and he brushed his fingers lightly along her cheek. “Really?”
She nodded and swallowed hard. “I’ve been afraid to say, scared I might be wrong.”
“Did you do a test?” he asked.
She shook her head and then turned around and reached into the drawer of the nightstand. “I thought we could do it together. I was going to wait.” She swallowed again, “But I also think I might have morning sickness.”
She pushed past him on the way to the bathroom and Jason follow
ed. He waited at the door, his hand on the doorframe to steady himself while inside his head, his bear was doing backflips.
A baby. He figured he’d been blessed enough to find his mate. He was committed to raising Lorcan as his own and teaching him about shifting. And he was happy. So very happy.
But this.
The door opened and Shannon came out, her face flushed, and a pregnancy test held between her finger and thumb. “Now, we wait.”
“I know,” she whispered and leaned into him.
As she pulled away, she took his hand and they went to the bed and sat down, side by side, staring at the white stick that would seal their fate. “What does that mean?” Jason asked as the result showed.
“It means we are going to have a little bear cub.” Shannon covered her mouth with her hand. “I’m going to have a baby.” Her hand went to her stomach. She’d been the best mother to Lorcan and now she was going to do it all over again. Only this time she’d have the baby’s father by her side.
Jason would be there for his family every minute of every day. His life was complete and as he kissed his mate, the past and all its sorrow and pain dimmed until it was just a memory. He never wanted to forget those who had given their lives for him. But he had to let go so that he could grab a hold of his future.
And what a future that promised to be.
