    FLASH POINT

Another shout came from outside. Gunshots too, but we were out of range. Journeying into the unknown.

“I don’t blame you for not trusting me,” Teach said quietly, standing beside me as if reading my thoughts. “But I know what it’s like to lose a loved one and to have that burning in your veins. And I know that if we don’t work together, we will most likely both be dead within the day.”

“Bullshit,” I snapped. A part of me wanted nothing more than to tear the man into tiny pieces. Instead, I managed to spit a few words. “Why the hell should I trust you? You’re a killer.”

“I am. I was. So many mistakes,” Teach replied matter-of-factly, as the elevator continued to drop. “But meeting you here today isn’t one of them.”

“What are you talking about?” I said, gripping the gun tightly.

Teach turned to me and said, “I ended a lot of lives in my work. I’m not proud of the things I’ve done. But I didn’t kill your family.”

I slammed the button. The elevator stopped, time slowed, and the world shifted under me.

      No, he’s a liar. A killer.

I couldn’t believe him. I wouldn’t. But as I looked at his face, filled with raw sorrow and pain—the same as my own—the truth, so distant before, felt within reach. A cloud becoming solid.

“So … who?” The words left my mouth before I knew what I was saying.

Teach looked at me with wide eyes.

      “Kellerman …and others.”

      “What do you—”

“Other men behind all this. A small group that have pulled the strings for too long and now must pay for what they have done. For what they have taken from both of us.”

      “My family …”

“And mine,” Teach continued. “The question is, will you help me stop them?”

Mind spinning, thoughts churning, I hit the button.

The elevator descended, and we left the world I knew behind.

“Start talking,” I said, knowing nothing would be the same again.
