“Love is hard to explain, Mia,” he said.
Well, I didn’t like his answer. I felt like I was asking whether he loved you back then, and his response was, “Love-ish.”
Of course, Garrett Hollis would never add “ish” to anything.
“Love isn’t hard,” I told him. “You tell me that the things we want are often not the things we need.”
Love is what we need. What we all need more than anything. To know that we are loved, but more importantly, to love someone else.
Love is the thing we both want and need.

PRESCOTT LANE is originally from Little Rock, Arkansas, and graduated from Centenary College in 1997 with a degree in sociology. She went on to Tulane University to receive her MSW in 1998, after which she worked with developmentally delayed and disabled children. She currently lives in New Orleans with her husband, two children, and two dogs.
