      * * *

      Will and I stayed on till late Sunday afternoon. We kept Devin’s secret. Laura asked me for a contribution, whatever I could afford, and I answered that I’d left my checkbook in Vieux Desert but would be sure to mail her and Charlie a few dollars. Then we left, arriving in town at nightfall. I took a walk on the jetty, a long steel-and-concrete finger poking into Vieux Desert bay. A light breeze blew, and a ridge of black cloud rimmed Lake Superior’s northern horizon. Snow was forecast for after midnight; it was probably snowing already on the Canadian shore, but the skies above me were clear for now. Orion glimmered in the east, and the Pleiades, visible to the naked eye, sparkled bright as ever.
