Janna and Stasia had broken from the table to try and figure out a compromise that could be offered. In the end, Boris’s demand was the one that had been folded. It was simply an unreasonable demand on his adult and more than adult son.
In return, the Ukrainian Republic would place a series of etheric communicators along the border and share any technology they found, especially plans that could upgrade existing oil-industry-based weapons systems and farm equipment to operate without diesel fuel.
Besides, as Janna had whispered to Boris before he agreed to the deal, it was unlikely that they would see any grandchildren if they forced Olaf to part with the determined Stasia. He was fascinated by her and would never forgive them for separating him from the unusual woman. Given how long Shifters tended to mourn the loss of a mate, it could be a century or more before he even started looking at women again, too.
After the agreement was reached, arrangements were made for etheric communications relays to be placed in locations of agreed strategic importance so there would always be a defense force on site. This would speed up the sharing of research from both sides. If Olaf were leaving New Romanovka for this fledgling Republic, then Boris would damned well make sure it had the best possible chance of survival.

I know I have been disappointing some of my many fans out there with how long this book has taken. It has been a year since I have published in the Kurtherian Universe. There are many reasons for this. I could have published earlier, but at the cost of giving you a much poorer book. I couldn’t hurt you that way, nor would my pride let me.
For the first half of the year I was spending much of my time mastering my craft. Learning how to improve my writing in long stories and learning to write shorter ones (much of my production of which falls outside the Kurtherian Universe.)
Every so often I’ve paused and wished honing writing skills was as easy, or at least straightforward, as sharpening a blade. It isn’t. However I am still finding writing fun. That is always a plus for something you hope will make up all your income eventually
I also had several bouts of illness and a Major Depressive Episode. (I cover the MDE in a short autobiographical piece, the Black Dog and when it Bites, in the Against the Tide Anthology that will be released in January)
I found this book hard to write well. To make it the best book I could for you, my fans. But I got there in the end. At least I hope I did.
I think I got the balance right for the Military fiction genre it is mainly aimed at.
The final judgement, of course, lays at the feet of you, my fans. I have improved my art massively over the year I feel.
It also caused me to rework Evacuation, which at the time of this publication I hope has been updated (cleaned, cleared and some pure Janna sections added to improve the depth of her character.)
I hope you enjoy it and you decide to give it positive reviews.

Whoop!
First, let me thank you for not only reading this story, but ALSO reading through our author notes as well.
Paul had a HELL of a 2017, and I hope that 2018 treats him a lot better personally with his health. We both want to thank you for not only supporting him, but encouraging him through the tough times and ever-so-patiently waiting as we get this book out to you at the ‘right’ time.
Boris and his family are fighting the good fight and working together to protect those they love, and yet allowing them to grow in tough times.
You can’t always protect those you love.
For myself, I have two young men that have gone to college, and I am now spending some time with them as they transition between their first and second semester. It’s a challenge to not ‘protect’ them from themselves, at times.
However, I’m learning that we have to let our children make their mistakes, and pay for their mistakes, or they will likely continue to make them far into their future.
Hurting themselves over and over again.
Often, failure (and suffering due to the failure) is the quickest route to learning NOT to do the shortcuts in life.
Or, at least it is the first of a multitude of times that life teaches us a lesson as it chips away at our stubbornness. Occasionally, we beat life and win.
Typically, life beats us.
This is a NEW YEAR, and we are leaving behind the crap that happened in 2017 (to the best of our abilities) and accepting all the cool stuff (like you!) that 2018 is bringing.

Paul C Middleton has worked several jobs, but has had most of his working life in Security. Patrolling dark empty places gave him much time to think on many things. It was not conducive to finding the time or place to write. Then his partner was diagnosed with severe epilepsy, requiring him to reduce his work hours to care for her.
Never one to let the grass grow under his feet, he found that writing enabled him to be available when she needed him and left him feeling like less of a drain on his friends and the world. He also has to thank his two beagles who have become an efficient Epilepsy warning system. When they 'make tongue' he knows to find his partner and get her into a lounge chair or onto a bed.
He tries to bring an uplifting undertone to his stories, but is happy to admit he has a somewhat dark viewpoint on the world.
