    The Poems of Octavio Paz

      sus trabajos subterráneos,

sus ritos feroces. Inmerso en la luz cruel,

      expiaba mi cuerpo-hormiguero, espiaba

la febril construcción de mi ruina.

Élitros: el afilado canto del insecto

corta las yerbas secas. Cactos minerales,

Después no hubo jardines Un día,

      somos constelaciones. El nim, enorme,

sabía ser pequeño. A sus pies

      supe que estaba vivo, supe

que morir es ensancharse, negarse es crecer.

Aprendí, en la fraternidad de los árboles,

      a reconciliarme, no conmigo:

No sabemos hacia dónde vamos,

transcurrir es suficiente, transcurrir es quedarse:

      una vertiginosa inmovilidad. Las estaciones,

oleaje de los meses. Cada invierno

una terraza sobre el año. Luz bien templada,

      resonancias, transparencias, esculturas de aire

      disipadas apenas pronunciadas: ¡sílabas,

islas afortunadas! Engastado en la yerba

el gato Demóstenes es un carbón luminoso,

la gata Semíramis persigue quimeras, acecha

      reflejos, sombras, ecos. Arriba,

      príncipes desterrados; la upupa,

      pico y penacho, un alfiler engalanado;

      la verde artillería de los pericos;

      los murciélagos color de anochecer.

En el cielo liso, fijo, vacío,

el milano dibuja y borra círculos.

      Ahora, quieto

sobre la arista de una ola:

      un albatros, peñasco de espuma.

      Instantáneo, se dispersa en alas.

No estamos lejos de Durban (allí estudió Pessoa).

Cruzamos un petrolero. Iba a Mombasa,

ese puerto con nombre de fruta. (En mi sangre:

Camoens, Vasco de Gama y los otros . . .)

      Blanco

      [1966]

By passion the world is bound, Avec le seul object dont le

by passion too it is released. Néant s’honore.

      The Hevajra Tantra Stéphane Mallarmé

      unheardunhearable

      matchless

      a word

      speechlessnameless

      Climbing and descending

the spine of the mineshaft ladder,

      abandoned language.

Under the skin of the penumbra

      a lamp beats. Survivor

in the sullen confusion, it rises

      in a copper stalk, breaks

      into leaves of clarity: shelter

      for fallen realities. Asleep

or extinct, high on its pole

(head on a pike) a sunflower

      light charred in a vase

of shadow. In the palm of an

      invented hand, the flower,

      not seen not imagined: heard,

      appears, a yellow chalice

      of consonants and vowels,

      burning.

on the wall the shadow of the fire flame encircled by lions

in the fire your shadow and mine lioness in the circus of the flames

      soul among sensations

the fire unlaces and fastens you

Ember Bread Grail fruits of the reworks

      Girl the senses open

you laugh—naked in the magnetic night

in the gardens of the flame

      The passion of compassionate coals

      A pulse-beat, insisting,

      a surge of wet syllables.

      Without saying a word,

      my forehead grows dark:

      a presentiment of language.

      Patience patience

      (Livingston in the drought)

      river rising a little

      Mine is red and scorches

      in the flaming dunes:

      Castiles of sand,

      shredded playing cards,

and the hieroglyph (water and coals)

fallen on the chest of Mexico.

I am the dust of that silt.

River of blood, river of histories

      of blood, dry river:

      mouth of the source

      gagged

      by the anonymous conspiracy

      of bones,

by the grim rocks of centuries

      and minutes: language

      is atonement, an appeasement

      of the speechless, the entombed,

      the daily assassinated,

      the countless dead. To speak

      while others work

      is to polish bones, sharpen

      silence to transparency,

      waves, whitecaps,

      water:

the rivers of your body the river of bodies

land of pulse-beats stars infusoria reptiles

to enter you downpour of sleepwalking cinnabar

land of closed eyes surge of genealogies

water with no thoughts games antics tricks

to enter me subject and object abject and absolved

entering your body river of suns

land of sleepless mirrors “the tall beasts with shining skins"

land of waking water seminal river of the worlds wheeling

in the sleeping night the eye that watches it is another river

watching I watch myself what I see is my creation

as though entering through my eyes perception is conception

into an eye more crystal clear water of thoughts

what I watch watches me I am the creation of what I see

delta of arms of desire water of truth

on a bed of vertigo truth of water

      Transparency is all that remains

      Desert smoldering

from yellow to a fleshy pink,

the land is a language burnt to dust.

      There are thorns, invisible spines

in the eyes. Three satiated vultures

      on a red wall.

      Bodiless faceless soulless,

      everywhere,

crushing all of us: this sun is unjust.

      Rage is mineral. Colors

      are relentless. The horizon’s relentless.

      Drumbeats drumbeats drumbeats.

The sky blackens like this page.

      Scatter of crows.

      Impending violet violence.

      The sands whirl up,

      thunderheads, herds of ash.

      The chained trees howl.

      Drumbeats drumbeats drumbeats.

Sky I beat you, land I beat you.

      Open sky, closed land,

flute and drum, lightning and thunder,

I open you and beat you. You open, land,

      your mouth full of water,

      your body gushes sky,

      you burst, land,

your seeds explode, the word grows green.

      unlacing spreading arid ripples

rising erecting an Idol in the arms of sand

naked as the mind shining multiplying refusing

in the reverberation of desire reborn escaping pursuing

      turning turning vision of hawk-thought

around the black idea goat in the rock cleft

fleece at the joining naked place

in a naked woman snapshot of a pulse-beat of time

firefly tangle of beings real unreal quiet vibrating

motionless under the motionless sun burnt meadow

the color of earth color of sun on the sand

the grass of my shadow on the place of the joining

my hands of rain darkened by birds

on your green breasts holiness enough

woman stretched out made in the image of the world

The world a bundle of your images

From yellow to red to green,

      pilgrimage to the clarities,

the word peers out from blue

      whirls. The drunk ring spins,

      the five senses spin

      around the centripetal

      amethyst. Dazzle:

      I don’t think, I see—not what I see,

the reflections, the thoughts I see.

      Precipitations of music,

      crystallized number.

      An archipelago of signs.

      Translucence, mouth of truths,

      clarity effaced by a syllable

      diaphanous as silence:

      I don’t think, I see:—not what I think,

      the blank face of forgetting,

      the radiant void.

I lose my shadow, I walk

      through intangible forests,

      sudden sculptures of the wind,

      endless things, sharpened paths,

      I walk my steps

      dissolving

      in a space that evaporates

      into thoughts I don’t think

you fall from your body to your shadow not there but in my eyes

in a motionless falling of waterfall sky and earth joining

you fall from your shadow to your name untouchable horizon

you drop through your likenesses I am your remoteness

you fall from your name to your body the furthest point of seeing

in a present that never ends the imaginings of sand

      you fall to your beginnin
    g scattered fables of wind

spilling on my body I am the stela of your erosion

you divide me like parts of speech space quartered god

you divide me into your parts altar of thought and knife

belly theater of blood axis of the solstices

tree of ivy firebrand tongue of coolness the heavens are male and female

earthquake of your thighs testimony of solar testicles

rain of your heels on my back thought phallus and word womb

jaguar eye in the eyelash thicket space is body sign thought

the flesh-colored cleft in the brambles always two syllables in love

      the black lips of the oracle P r o p h e c y

whole in each part you divide yourself spirals transfigurations

your body is the bodies of the moment time world is body

thought dreamt made flesh seen touch dissolved

seen by my ears horizon of music spreading

smelled by my eyes bridge hung from color to smell

caressed by my nose naked smell in the hands of air

heard by my tongue canticle of flavors

eaten by my touch feast of mist

to inhabit your name to depopulate your body

to fall in your shriek with you house of the wind

      The unreality of the seen

      brings reality to seeing

      At the center

of the world of the body of the spirit

      they are this insect

      Thought fluttering

      among these words They are

your footsteps in the next room

      the birds that return

The neem tree that shelters us shelters them

      Its branches mute thunder

In its leaves the drought drinks water
