An hour later, after Craig had hugged and thanked Molly, she pressed a piece of paper into his hands.
“What’s this?”
“It’s my scone recipe,” Molly replied earnestly.
“But you’ve never … you don’t …”
“I do now,” Molly interjected. “No more secrets. None. Not even a recipe. I want you and Syd to make them on a Sunday afternoon and think of me.”
“We’ll do that,” Craig promised her. “But when we don’t make them as well as you and Nigel, which you know is inevitable, we’ll get in the car and drive to the Mad Hatter.”
Squeezing Craig’s hand tightly, Molly replied, “I need to get Stan home. His breathing’s not been too good of late.”
Countless tears later, Sydney and Craig left The Dying Duck for The Haven. Two cats and a dog watched the groom carry his giggling bride across the threshold.
After talking and making love throughout the night, they watched the sunrise. Limbs entangled beneath a blanket, Craig turned to Sydney.
“Time for a new chapter, Mrs. Monroe.”
Snuggling into his chest, Sydney replied, “I’m more than ready. Mead will always be here if we want to return.”
“It’s a great place to raise a family,” Craig suggested.
Sydney pulled a face. “How do we explain the great grandpa and aunts and Uncles?”
Kissing her neck, Craig said, “That may have to remain our little secret.”
