For past two years, his two sons Brandon and Sean along with Curt had tried to get him back into the social world he’d once enjoyed with Gina. Maybe now was the time. He sat up straighter. No drowning himself in memories and loneliness tonight. First thing he needed to do…find Laura Marks.
His computer beckoned him. If he remembered correctly, their school had a website with a page for the alumni association and a directory of former students by year. As least he’d given the information for one several years ago, but had never actually visited it.
If she had email like most everybody else, he’d make first contact that way. Email would keep pressure off either one of them.
A search did bring up the website for River Point High School Alumni Association. He clicked on the year of his graduation, and a list of names appeared under the heading of “Where They Are Now.” A quick scan brought him to Laura’s name. There it was, and yes, she did live in Dallas, and she had email.
He leaned forward. Jim’s name appeared in parentheses after Laura’s name. A check up the alphabet revealed Jim’s name, but the word deceased appeared after it. Howard gulped and sat back. Jim had passed away? This would make getting in touch with her even more difficult. Knowing she was married would have helped keep his emotions intact. When he checked the address again, he realized they lived only a few miles apart. Strange that they’d lived in the same city and never saw each other.
All through college Howard had harbored the hope that someday he’d be good enough for Laura. But those hopes evaporated like the dew in the hot morning sun when she and Jim announced their engagement that winter before their college graduation. Then he’d met Gina, and all became right with his world.
That was then, but could he overcome his memories in the now? He turned to his computer and typed in a brief message. “Hi, Laura, it looks like we’ll be working together to plan the reunion for our class. Twenty-five years is a long time. Think we can do it? Howie” With the click of the mouse, a prick stung his heart. Would she even answer him?
Martha Rogers was born in Texas and lived in Dallas the first 18 years of her life. After graduating from Baylor University she moved to Houston and has been there ever since. Martha is a retired teacher at both secondary and college levels. She and her husband Rex enjoy spending time with their grandchildren and attending football, baseball, and basketball games when one of the grandchildren is playing or performing. Her four, soon to be five great-grandchildren are most important right now. Martha loves to cook and experimenting with recipes and enjoys scrapbooking when she has time and isn't on a deadline.
