“Delaney!” Sierra leaped off the couch to embrace her friend. “Congratulations! How are you feeling?”

      “I’m great. Couldn’t be better.”

Jen passed around grilled asparagus wrapped in parmesan cheese, and stuffed mushrooms, then eased onto a chair. “The turkey will be ready in an hour.”

Sierra leaned back into the crook of Nick’s arm and looked around the room. Conversation and laughter washed over her, punctuated by the shouts of the boys playing video games in the other room and the giggles of the two girls on the floor.

A year ago, she hadn’t known any of these people. Last Christmas, she’d spent the day with her mother and father, helping her mom make the turkey and doing the Times crossword puzzle with her dad. Her throat swelled with the memory, and she swallowed.

On the night their plane crashed, she’d lost everything most important to her. But out of that pain and grief had come this.

Her husband and their son. These friends, who were becoming like sisters to her. And their growing families.

She and Nick had bought some land to build their dream home near Otter Tail, and they spent as many weekends as possible up here. Their children would all grow up together, playing on the sand, running through the woods, having bonfires on the beach. She’d lost her parents, but she’d found a new family.

“How about a toast?” she said, lifting her glass of wine. “To new beginnings, and new families. And to years of Christmas dinners together.”
