“I want you to be happy, Vicky,” he said, letting her go.
She was quiet a moment, her gaze fixed on the mission grounds beyond the window. Finally she said, “It’s like the new world that Wovoka promised would come someday. The mission is beautiful and peaceful. The ancestors left this for us, like a sign, something to strive for and hope for. No wonder the people turned out for the board meeting. It wouldn’t be the same here without this place.”
“You sound like the pastor.”
She laughed, and there was something free and light in the sound of her voice that made him glad.
“Oh, no,” she said. “There’s only one pastor at St. Francis Mission, John O’Malley.”
